Oxidation on paint

Just pick up another 78 F-250 4x4, the paint is really oxidized. Always used rubbing compound in the past to remove it, but with all the talk of clay was just wondering if the clay bars do the same thing?

clay bar is used to remove contaminants from the paint/clear coat ... not to remove oxidation. You'll still need to use rubbing compound. One would use clay bar, after wash in an effort to prep the car for wax .. not to restore paint.

I'm not an expert on these issues so take my suggestions with a grain of salt until someone with actual professional understanding chimes in, but my understanding of oxidation is that the paint surfaces separate. I don't think a clay bar will be strong enough for this application - and it will probably require a sand and polish or some form of chemical treatment.

Once again, very limited knowledge here, I've really only used clay bars for overspray, brake dust, and rail dust.
