Not too surprising this is a fad that comes and goes with rich people. It was all the rage in affluent white people in London and NYC in like the 50s. There's pics of some dainty rich white woman in a fur coat with tiger on a leash walking around some high end shopping district.

It would be cool if people set up a program to actually domesticate those bigger cats :) I would take a domesticated one as part of a true domestication breeding program. Until then, those idiots are playing with fire.

Lots of dumb people. My only hope is that they all get eaten by their animals.

Ah, humans. Hurting, destroying, ruining everything they touch. Too bad for animals and other human beings. :(

There used to be lions throughout Asia, Middle East and elsewhere. Tigers too. And lots of other animals. Now, the only lions left in Asia are in a small pocket in India and that's in a protected wildlife refuge. Sad.

While in the West, people have trophies of their catch. This Bachmann girl on Youtube killed a lion and posed a picture with it.

It's retarded and I'm not going to feel bad if some of them are eaten.

But I have to admit this picture is all kinds of awesome.

An adult lion needs 11-15lbs of meat per day and can live longer than 20 years in captivity. So, figure $50/day just for food that's about $18,000 a year and over $365,000 for the lifetime of the cat.

Yea, what you actually want is a dog. They can be as big as or bigger than big cats, however, they are domesticated.

But everybody's like...
Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care
We aren't caught up in your love affair

I think most of these people abandon them when they become full grown.

I love cats, but there's no way in hell I'd have a big one. Cats are flakes, and can go off for no apparent reason. It's not an issue with a standard kitty, but I wouldn't want to be around a lion on bad day.

There are breeders trying to create domesticated big cats. They've been partially successful: they're far more tame than your typical big cat, but every now and then they'll make a snack out of Fido. Oops.

My cat is domesticated. He's really fun.

Even then, if I pet him the wrong way he'll defend himself. Mostly just claws and nibbling.

If I had a cheetah with the same awesome personality as my little black cat, I'd still be scared shitless of it because of 'claws and nibbling'.

Yeah, even normal domesticated cats tend to have a pretty big mean streak. I'd never trust a big one.

That has been one of my goals for some years even before that Comcast ad spilled the beans! :colbert:

By the way--giraffes are major assholes, too.

Those horns on top of their heads? they use them to smack rival's heads. Now, imagine one whose head reaches up to about your crotch level, and when it gets pissed....

Theres an article thats in the New york times that states 8 out of 10 animals that make the journey by sea (exporting) don't make it. The thought of owning one is cool, but I'd rather see them in the wild...without being hunted.

lions and tigers often kill there mates, bro's and cage buddys because of how nervous they are when being transported, over history though lions have been documented saving people from numerous animal attacks, thats not to say he won't kill you, but hes social trait tied in with his nobility made lions one of the most wanted animals through out circuses, zoo's and menageries, in that case they were being killed more than any animal upon the need of owning one.

But in the process we were able to see just how the lion got a peice of his title the... King of the beast, its un-real how many animals the lion has killed in captivity through out history, check this out, Clyde beattys statement saying that he lost many tigers to lions over the course of his carreer:

Beatty Fights Off Lion After Tiger Is Killed Tuscaloosa News Feb 20 1951

Beatty said the tiger that was killed was one of his veteran performers and had attacked him years ago, sendinging him to the hospital...She was the whole act, he said,"I loved that cat I wouldn't have taken $10,000 for her" He explained the tiger was a roll over cat....He said he will watch the killer lion very closely from now on...the biggest expense I have is tigers killed by lions he said, They are natrual enimies...that makes the show better, He said lions have killed probably 50 tigers in the years he has been working with the big Jungle cats.
http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...ed+prob-ably+tigers+in+the+years+he+was&hl=en

Around 50 fucking tigers, jesus...and there are other books and newspaper articles that documented him losing others as well after that statement...lions are truely the King of beast, atleast for the Big cats. That quota shows that its rare for tigers to win, since through all of history theres only some 17 accounts of tigers killing lions, and majority of those were of un-fair bouts. Tigers, Jaguars, leopards and all the rest of the felidaes belong in the wild...and humans should stop with the logging companys and destroying there habitats already...thousands of miles of land is destroyed each year, yet there are millions of abanded, evicted and houses that have no people living in them...fucking face palm.

Stupidly dangerous thing to do... but the guy seems to really love his cats. They'll probably reciprocate until they get hungry or mad.

House cats are not domesticated, just flexible. If you don't expose a kitten to people from basically day one they have no special tolerance for people. One generation in the wild and they are totally feral again.

The problem is that's not that likely to happen. What is likely to happen is the animal gets put down after an attack, or gets dumped off somewhere, or even just plain released into the wild, or just dies from improper care because people are fucking morons.

Savannah Cats are the closest you can get to those bigger cats. Even then as the bloodline gets diluted they become more housecat like. The Savannahs with more Serval in their bloodline will exhibit more wild traits, and are only borderline domesticated. They won't take well to more than one or two humans, won't take well to kids or other pets, and can have problems with spraying.

Of course, more Serval in their bloodline also means you get the larger size and exotic coat more often. If you read up on domesticated silver foxes from Russia there seems to be a trend where the wild animal personality traits are intertwined with physical traits. When you lose one end you lose the other, and after enough generations you are left with a normal domesticated cat or dog.

I agree with others in this thread that you wouldn't want a large cat as a pet because if they ever do turn on you, your time is up.

Cats have been domesticated for thousands of years.

Thats true, domestication is just a human concept, people always think in general a wild specimen will always kill a domesticated one, but then define that formality? What if you were to train them to kill... In the 20th century where the average person is glued to the TV, doesnt hunt and kill his own food, lounges around walking in circles all day, then I would think so, but not the medeival, dark ages all the way down to the B.C days, people could have been kidnapping lion and tiger cubs to protect them selves at those times. Having a quarter of a ton apex predator as your pet helping you hunt isn't to shabby.

Instead of a golden retriver, you have a 500 pound tiger or lion you raised from a cub helping you hunt, providing security, a freind, and or family member, in general they have low probabilty of killing (Biteing the hand that feeds them). Its more then possible, it probably happened millions of times in those eras. Circuses are proof they can be tamed, even wild ones, but raising one to mimic your life style will depend on how you are mentally. The concrete jungle (Human territory) is the most poorly constructive un-sustainable creation on this planet.

Forget head, they swing their heads down and try to puncture rival's lungs.
