Owners of IBM Thinkpad T23!!! Give me advice!!

Great news! I just bought a IBM thinkpad T23 for the first time. Model 26475RU. This is a great machine..wow.

I would like to ask owners of IBM thinkpad T23 to give me any advice about how to use this machine... I don't want to make stupid mistake..

Is there any way to make the screen to fit the physical size of LCD when I viewing at 1024x768?
1400x1050 is way too small for me to view websites... any clue?

How is this infrared can be used? Where can it be used for?

Since it does not come with the CDs (recovery), I heard that it is in hidden partitiion and I could use it to restore Win2K. What if I lose or delete Win2k partition, is there any way to make a copy of that hidden patition onto a CD? as a backup CD.

Someone told me that Windows XP is not good for the notebook yet, told me to keep the Win2K. Is this right? Is there a problem using XP in thinkpad T23?


Please give me any advice how to use this T23 very wisely and carefully.....Help, I must know to take care this expensive notebook...(i'm a college student)

This probably belongs in the general hardware forum, but I'll bite anyway.

To answer your questions:

1) Yes, you can adjust the display settings to stretch a 1024x768 display to the full screen. In the advanced display settings, there is an S3 DuoVue tab. From there, you can change the screen from center to stretch mode, so you can run at lower resolutions while using the whole screen. You will probably find that the screen looks fuzzy in stretch mode at low resolutions, however.

2) Windows XP works great on a T23. You'll need to download the latest Windows XP drivers from IBM's ThinkPad support site, however.

Best advice - don't have bad luck. IBM CS is horrible, when my sister's T21 broke down it took countless phone calls and *three* repair attempts by IBM to fix the problem.

1) For me that option is in the bios to expand the res if u run lower than native res
2) Win XP works fine
3) Urs didn't come with a recovery cd? Mine did, but i have an older T20
4) Infared can be used to send files to other laptops or to sync with a handheld, i only use it to sync with my palm other than that pretty much useless

IBM CS is great, sent me new keyboards for my laptop (2x, first time a girl i lent my laptop too broke the A key!), getting my screen replaced for free too (white spot problem)

Great laptop! I got a T-21 at work. Works great with Linux

To answer your infrared question. It's a method used to transfer files 'through the air'. What i mean by that....You don't need
a network cable or parralel cable. Sync it up beside another laptop with infrared ( the two infrared ports facing each other of course)
and a link will be establised. Unfortunatly, speed isn't the fasted, but it's still amazing technology!
