I got pressured into buying this board a couple months ago cuz I was pretty broke and my other board had died. Up till now I was pretty happy with it, but I finally buckled and did the pencil trick, reinstalled the cpu, went to change the multiplier...only to realize THERE IS NO WAY TO CHANGE THE MULTI!! I'm pretty pissed right now. Is there any workaround anyone's found for this, or am I stuck with crappy FSB OCs only?

***EDIT***

OK, it looks like this question doesn't have a happy answer so I'm going to add one to go along with it. How about some suggestions for a Kt266a board for under 150. Features I'm looking for in order of importance: Stability, Overclocking Ability (Voltages, Multiplier, FSB, etc...the more options the better), RAID. The 2 I'm wavering the most between are the Epox 8kha+ or the Soyo K7V Dragon+. From what I've described (discounting the RAID factor) do you think the Epox fits the bill? I don't want to drop 40 bucks for bells and whistles I don't really need. I've sort of considered Nforce as well. Pretty much fits with my comments about spending extra cash for features I don't really need.

I don't know of any workaround (maybe someone else might) but you could always try to get a "golden socket" unit. Of course, it would probably cost in the area of $40-50 and there goes your savings from buying a "budget" board. That's the only thing I know of though.

I still can't believe they did this. If no solution turns up in the next few days I'll prob be selling it and getting something else. SO if you need a very solid board and don't want to do any extensive OCs, keep your eyes out 😉

Still very interested in what other people have found out with this board though. Not ready to give up by a long shot.

<< Why the hell didn't you find this out before you bought the board >>

Like i said above, I was rushed into cuz the one I was using died so I didn't even have acces to buy online and I had to buy locally, where they had only one board for under 150, plus I had to buy DDR on top of that. All I could go by was what I remembered reading and I still haven't read anything negative about this board. No one has mentioned this issue except me. I'm trying to make do with what I have since not all of us can throw cash at their computers constantly. Thanks for the help though. Appreciate that.

Here is an article that talks about using the Golden Socket device I mentioned earlier. It's the best I could find for now and doesn't talk about how much or where to get one. Perhaps you could write to the author for this information.

Hey Buz2b, I definitely appreciate all the help, but it'd prob be easier and just as cheap to get another board and sell this one off. Actually I've been meaning to upgrade my G/Fs system so this'll be a good step up from her 300a Celeron 🙂

time to start savin!

Just an FYI the Gigabyte GA7VTXH board has multiplier settings, it's identical to the VTXE except for the multiplier dips and onboard lan. If your gonna get a new board you might look at the GA7VRX or GA7VRXP, based on the new KT333 chipset, USB 2.0, etc. $107 and $132 respectively at newegg. Difference being the 7VRXP has Raid and onboard Lan. I believe both have fsb, cpu voltage, and clock settings adjustable.

To be honest there hasn't been anything about this board that really makes me want to follow Gigabyte. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, but it's not really standout. I have just started reading up on Soltek and I'd be interested in trying them out. MSI seems like a possibility, as does Soyo. The Dragon+ was the board I'd stuck with all along in my original plans for my XP upgrade but money got tight and I took what I could get. I've used Abit and Asus for BX based systems, and was thrilled with both, so those are good fallbacks, although they're a bit spendy for me. This Purple Ray though, is really grabbing my attention. Not for the appearance (kinda burned out on the modding idea) but for the wider variety of tweaking options than pretty much anyone else.

I've owned one or more boards by the following manufacturers:

Intel
FIC
Asus
Gigabyte
MSI
ECS
Shuttle

Of them all, I am most happy with Gigabyte. The two boards from Gigabyte are the only ones that have never crashed as a result of a hardware bug or memory issue. My Shuttle AK31a has never crashed (as in blue screened) but several apps have died ugly deaths mysteriously, including Explorer.exe, which seems to "generate errors and must be closed" about once per day. The ECS died completely on me after 4 months of working fine. The MSI still works, but refused to boot with some Mushkin RAM that I bought. Something about it not polling the serial EEPROM on the SDRAM properly. Lame.

I realize that these are generalizations and should not be taken out of context, but I'm just posting them FYI.

Bought a Soltek SL-75DRV4 from newegg yesterday. Should solve my problems, and my g/f gets my 900/gigabyte combo for a huge upgrade from her 300a celeron.
