Own the TI-86 and TI-83.. what can my 86 do that the 83 can't?

I used the TI-83 all through high school and am now at a university. I got this 86 as a hand-me-down and I am taking a statistics class now.

The key layout seems similar, and its not different enough that it will confuse me from my old TI-83.. but does it offer any substantial extra function or features?

Not really much, I remember it being heavy with the menus at the top and using F1-F5 for everything... the real difference would be like from an 83 to an 89 (with the addition of a Computer Algebra System, etc.)

both do different things. 83 = statistical calculator. 86 = more of an engineering calculator

I really wish people would quit saying this on these forums. Many (probably most) of us inquiring are college students.

While your advice is true and logical.. what is not so true and logical is that most universitys do NOT allow TI89s on finals, or sometimes interim tests.

So while a TI89 might be grand, I can't have one. Maybe if I need a calculator after school. But for students, a 83 or 86 makes more sense.

I am a junior, but I did a search and found a freshman who hadnt even gone to school yet asking for advice on what calculator to get. People convinced him to get a TI89, when what he needed convinced of first was to double check with his school, and even some math professors to see if that is OK on his tests..

So keep that in mind before vomiting the TI89 all over. Its great, yes. All expensive calculators are.
But its no good for a student to get dependant on it and then not able to use it at all on tests.

That leaves the 83 and 86 as the only options without knowing if the university allows for 89s.. and any credible university won't.

I believe you are correct. It appears the 86 only does 3 variable statistics and the 83 can do 7 variables.

Thats surprising, I was expecting the 86 to be superior in every way.
It seems to have 4X as much memory though, and I think a faster processor as well.
