Just bought a very nice (looks new) 2000 Maxima SE with 79,213 miles-3 days ago.

Before I drove it for first time, tank was about 1/3 full. Assumed it was unleaded. After sale, went to Autozone and bought Ocatne Booster and a seperate Fule system cleaner additives. Then put both in tank at same tme, and put about 5 gallons of premium fuel in.

Yesterday, I filled the tank with Premium gas. Went on a road trip, and @ 70 miles into it, the 'Check Engine Soon' light came on. Man I S!HIT my pants. Never seen/heard of this before??? Pulled over, nothing amiss. Gas cap on tight. Car drives like a champ. (Though break pads need to be replaced in 2-3 months)

ODD?? Why now. Is this really a problem, or computer error. BTW, before the road trip I took it for the state inspection sticker. It failed the emissions part, but safety wise okay. Tech said he couldn't get an accurate reading from the car computer.

Thoughts/Advice???

This is starting to really sour my vacation...... Ugggh

You need to figure out what your check engine codes are.

forums.maxima.org <--- great site, tons of info on here.

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=374481 that link leads to how to check it.

you will have to bring it over to autozone or some place that checks codes for free. after you know the diagnostic numbers though (ex: p0140) you can look it up on that link i sent you to figure out what exactly is wrong.

go to autozone and have them pull the codes for free.

Im guessing ignition coil since its a known problem with 99-2001 maximas and infinitis

You can also buy a reader for a little over $100 to read or reset the (check light) codes yourself. Often the check light can be reset be temporarily disconnecting the battery also. This will not pass the emission tests until (generally speaking) 3 days of history are created producing no error code. It could be as simple as you left the gas cap loose and now it needs 3 error free days to reset itself after that error.

The error can be any of 100s of things, but most are not crucial. Manually check the oil and fluid levels to eliminate the obvious, and check it further as soon as possible.

I have a 2000 Maxima SE. My check engine light has been off and on for years.
I would advise you to have someone check your airflow sensor because it goes bad on Maxima's frequently.

Yeah, probably hosed one of the O2 sensors.

People who use octane boost crack me up.

QFT. I bought a used Isuzu Rodeo from a coworker a few years ago and poured a can of fuel injector cleaner in it and promptly got a CEL. Hosed one of the O2 sensors.

OP-Did you buy this car private party or from a used car lot?
