Just because the a DOE levied a fine does not mean that a nuclear device was almost detonated. And the fact that the LA Times carries an article doesn't mean much to me either. If it was left up to them, we wouldn't even have nuclear weapons. They wouldn't have an agenda would they?

Oh my God.

Yep, Jmman is right. A nuclear warhead is extremely difficult to detonate when not armed and even then it has multiple defences againt accidental (or even on purpose) detonation.

"Weekly reports have noted a series of violations of authorized procedures. On Nov. 27, the company was fined $110,000 for safety violations involving excessive force used in 2004 in disassembling a W56 nuclear bomb ? an old design that lacks modern safety features."

I guess "lacks modern safety features" means nothing.

Yes, most people are well aware of that.

However, this was an older model (without newer safeguards) and it was being dismantled in an improper fashion.

That means it was being taken apart wrong, get it?

All bets are off when one starts disassembling nuclear weapons in violation of federal standards, FTL.

That's why they were fined by the Energy Departmnent. They were not following approved procedures. The Department of Energy is the Federal Agency that regulates and controls this factory; I think I'd trust their opinion before some know-it-all who posts nonsense on the intarweb.

The speculation over whether or not there was actually almost an accidental nuclear detonation is beside the point. To me the main issue is why in the world are employees with such a delicate, sensitive and important job as this on mandatory double time? Surely more people can be trained-at a much greater increase in safety. It probably would cut into the bottom line, however-that is the main reason for excessive overtime.
