Overlay Video dark until NVIDIA control applet launched

I have a Nvidia geforce 6600 card.

Video played on WMPLAYER is very dark ... to troubleshoot I decided to fire up the NVIDIA applet from within Display properties. The instant it starts ... the overlay brightens ... so I don't have to really make any changes within the applet.

Whats going on ? Any clues ?

Yeah, it's flakey. You can try resetting default and applying but it may not stick -at least without saving a profile so either try doing that or enable the old CP instead and again, reset Overlay colors to default then save as a profile.
