I've encountered a perplexing problem. Running Win98SE on a Compaq, and in the past this slowing of everything by factors of 3-4 times occur every few months. I used to do reinstallation every few months because of what seems to be OS corruption, so didn't notice it at first. But now every few days the computer slows down a lot, without any trace of viruses and such. I've found a solution: turn off the computer till the hard drives are cool to touch. Then it will be fast again. Sometimes it slows down soon after I turn the computer on. More often after a few hrs of use. But most of the times the drives are very warm, and there's no problem. Is it at all possible that a hot drive can slow down? If not, what may be the culprit here?
There doesn't seem to be space for an extra fan in the case. Any suggestions?
Sorry to ramble on. But I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks.
