Overheating problem

After 20 minutes or so of playing CS: S, I get the occassional 3-5 second pauses accympanied with a sound loop. I minimized and checked the BFG 6800 GT temp and it was hovering at around 79-80 degrees Celsius. Even though this is within parameters, I suspect it's a heat issue. I'm running on the 66.93 drivers right now, since anything above that, it becomes a lot worse. Anyone else encountering these problems?

You need to confirm it's heat related. Easy to do. Take the cover off the computer and point a desk fan at the card. If it doesn't do it anymore you know it's a heat issue for sure.

80 C is very hot - even for a GPU.

Another possibility is an IRQ Channel sharing issue (not the same as an IRQ conflict). Even though this article is a bit dated, it still accurately describes the problem and how to fix it: http://soldcentralfl.com/quakecoop/glfaq5.htm#5_9

Hope this helps...
