hi,
i recently built my new pc.the config is:

i7 920 cpu
4 gb ddr3 1066 ram
msi platinum MB
500+160 hdd
ati 4870 1gb gpu
500w frontech smps

now, when i replaced my gpu(8600gts) by ati4870 and used it for 15mins or so, my pc turned off.and i could not start it again.
i found out later that my smps died on me.when i used it with my old gpu for 1 day it ran fine.
what could be the reason for that to happen?do i need more power?do i need a bigger cabinet?
one other thing is that my cpu started spitting out more heat once i replaced my gpu.what do i need to do to solve all these problems?could a lot of heat be the problem for my dead smps?please help me out...thanks....

You never want to go with the minimum requirements in a power supply. You want overhead to give the PSU some breathing room. Also just because a power supply says 500Watt doesn't mean it can supply that continuously. Most cheap supplies that say 500Watt mean they can put out 500Watts right before they go up in smoke. A larger case allows more airflow, but I don't think that was why your old supply failed.

Frontech PSU's aren't that good... although they seem to very popular where I live because they are dirt cheap. I say buy a good PSU from brands like Cooler Master, Antec or Corsair. They are more expensive but you won't regret it.

For cabinets I usually go look for Cooler Master.

That should be good. You could also go to a good PC hardware store in your locality (in India) and check out the PSU's they have. I'm also from India and that's what I did when I built my rig, usually they have those Frontech PSU's lying around but ask them for CM or Antec PSU's.

Simple, power supply manufacturers LIE. Just because the sticker claims 500 watts doesnt mean it will do 500, or even close to being clean power
