I have a specific question and a subsequent question which is much more broad.
First off, brand new system. Here's the specs:
AMD XP 1600+ w/Thermaltake Volcano6Cu+
Soyo Dragon KT333 Ultra
512MB PC2700 DDR
GeForce2 GTS
Matrox G450 Dual Head PCI
Pinnacle TV PCI
40GB Maxtor 7200rpm
1 DVD and a 24x CDRW
Looks good on paper, but I'm having troubles.
Installation went without a hitch. Smooth and easy. Not one hiccup.
Installed all the appropriate drivers and updates (by the way it's Win2k pro).
But suddenly without much warning, my computer screen would just lock up. No error messages, no nothing. Nothing in the sys logs. SO now what? Well, after a few restarts, I noticed that my TV was running during the crashes. AHAH! (I thought). So I thought I'd see if the TV Tuner was to blame, but lo and behold, more lockups WITHOUT running the TV tuner. Hmm... is it the ram? I used SiSoft RAM tester and Burn-in wizard and passed everything. Hmmm.. NOW WHAT? Video drivers? DirectX crud? What have I missed?
So now, I'm currently thinking that the system is overheating. So when I leave the case shell OFF, the CPU temp is right around 102-3 F. With the case back on, it jumps to 113F. Yikes. That's 10 Degrees. Is this NORMAL? I'm not used to having such a system like this, but I have no frame of reference as to temperatures and what is normal or not.
Please, any suggestions or comments would be appreciated!
Much thanx!!!
