Overheating northwood

My 3.06ghz northwood was running a bit warm(about 60c under load). I just got a new tube of artic silver 5, so I figured I would just go ahead and put a fresh coat on to see if it would bring the temps back down some. I took off the xp-120, and it pulled the cpu out with it. It bent some pins around the outside edge, but I straitend them out with a credit card. I cleaned off the old thermal paste using 91% isopropal from both the heatsink and the cpu. I waited a few minutes, then put on a fresh coat of AS5, re-installed the cpu and heatsink, then booted her up.

Was idling at 48c in the bios, which is about the same as it was before, so I went in to windows, and started a prime95 tourcher test to see if the load temps came down any. Instead, they were much higher. It went to the mid 50's almost instantly, and then kept climbing all the way up to 72c. I shut it down, so I could make sure the heatsink was on right and making good contact. I touched the heatpipes and they were very hot to the touch, and the heatsink was seated correctly.

I tried cleaning and re applying the thermal paste again, and same results. I tried 2 other thermal pastes, one that had come with the xp-120, and one that had come with a retail intel heatsink, same results. I tried the thermaltake heatsink I had in my other socket 478 PC, that has a 6000 rpm fan, and it idled a little cooler but still got up to 70c under load. I tried my old SLK-947u that I was originaly using on this motherboard, and same thing load temps in the 70's, and throttling.

I can't figure out why this thing is running so hot, nothing else in the system has changed, I still have good airflow, the ambient temp is the same, but the proccessor is overheating.

I have now removed the heatspreader from the CPU, only cutting one finger in the process lol, and now the load temps with the xp-120 have gone down to 65c. It's no longer throttling of course, but I can't figure out why it's running so hot. It's still seems to be making good contact as the base of the heatsink and the heatpipes are still hot to the touch while it's running. I'm not sure what else to do...

How long have you had that chip running? And how much voltage are you feeding it?

It is possible that over time a high voltage has damaged the chip.

Well it's still running hot, but stable at the same time. It's stayed at 64-65c for the past hour with prime 95 running, and 3dmark01 looping. But I don't understand this drastic temp change at all.

That is rather strange. You could try letting the AS5 set, as the temps generally drop a few to several degrees C when it does.

Hmm, well I was gone and left prime95 and the 3dmark loop running for 6 hours. I had throttle watch going to a log file, and it didn't throttle at all. Temps have actualy gone down a few more degrees, now at 59-60c under load as compared to 64-65c. Back to temps it was at before this hole mess at least, still a bit warm for my liking, but this chip has always run warm for some reason. Running prime95, super PI 32m, and 3dmark01 right now, if it stays stable, and the temps don't start shooting back up, I guess I'll just have to be happy with it the way it is.
