overheating laptop..... severe

my girlfriend has a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D laptop ( i think) 80gig hard drive, radeon 9700pro, 512 ram, pentium 4 3.2Ghz with HT

now i know a P4 in a laptop is a bad idea, but if it didnt work, they wouldnt have made it.

the area above the hard drive gets really really toasty. and the rest of the laptop gets soo hot that the CPU is being very agressive with its throttling... its basically running a slow as physically possible.

the laptop is almost unbearable to touch, you cant rest your wrists on it for any length of time. and this is when all she had open was microsoft word!

MSN and watching video at the same time just wont happen, its running to slow to do it!

something is wrong, it wont even keep cool when its elevated off the desk using little bottle caps under its feet.

she's 200miles away though so theres little else i can do till i visit.

what else can i do except reseat all the heatsinks with AS5?

you could look into buying a laptop cooler (Vantec makes some as do others on Newegg.com), although the effectiveness of them is debateable. Also you could google to see if anyone's written a fan control utility for that machine. You might try shooting the vents with compressed air to see if there's any blockage from dustbunnies. I wonder if the fans are even working if it gets that hot? If the fan bearings are wearing out, perhaps you could shoot the fans themselves with a tube of graphite? That's about all I can think of.

"... but if it didnt work, they wouldnt have made it. " But, it works. A lot of those P4 laptops were made by many OEMs, and they all are mini-furnaces.

A cooler pad might help some. A CPU replacement, if possible, would also help. Bottom line - if you can sell it - do so.

My laptop could be very warm to the touch above the HDD plate. I added a Yate Loon Cool Plate and my laptop temps went down 10F.

I always make sure it's cooling my Inspiron. Yeah, I disconnected the USB power plug accidentally and noticed the top plate warming up again.

One other thing to check is the intake air vents. Clear out any dust bunnies if you haven't in a long time. Dust is a killer heat destroyer of laptops.

PKME is correct; cleaning out the ducts may rectify the problem by itself. Dust bunnies are a major killer of P4-based laptops.

Blow out the dust from the HSF area. This is why they stopped putting mobile P4 3.2's in laptops - it cant handle the heat.

Along with everything else posted here, run the task manager and just see if something is hung up and running the CPU harder than is necessary. Maybe a startup program is corrupted or installed wrong.
