Overheating Computer?

My uncle has a Pavillion XT973. I took his PC100 128MB DIMM out and put in two PC133 Kingston Value RAM DIMMS, 256MB each, since the HP site states that the computer uses PC133 RAM that runs at 100 speeds.

Suddenly after an hour of use, the computer locks up and the only way to get it running back normally is to start in safe mode, then reboot.

Could it be that the RAM is either incompatible or is just overheating? The cruddy HP BIOS doesn't let me modify any of the timings or settings for the memory.

FYI there is a gigantic plastic thing inside the case, right where the case fan is. I guess it's there to lead the hot air from the CPU to the outside, but I think this is preventing proper cooling.

The computer did not have this problem until I changed the RAM, so I'm thinking that might be it...it's pretty damn dusty in there too.

Usually it will lock up within 1.5 hours of use, then the computer will say (when restarting) such and such file is missing...then when i do the safe mode, reboot, the message onscreen is "windows has recovered from a serious error"
