I had to pick my son up from preschool. I got to it 15 min early so was looking at the artwork. 2 women were talking about nuclear power near where i was standing.
one was saying how we should close down all plants. her reasoning was what IF something happened here in northern IL (btw we have hundreds and hundreds of flat corn fields) that happened in Japan.
the conversation went pretty as as fallows:
woman 1:aren't you afraid of the reactors going down here like in japan?
woman 2:no. its not the same situation. they are built differently here.
woman 1:what? you don't think the ones here are built to withstand a 15 meter tsunami?
women 2: no.
women 1:so aren't you afraid that they will blow up then!?
women 2:if a 15 meter tsunami hits the reactor in oregon (small town near us with the plant) we have more to worry about then it blowing up.
women 1:what!? you aren't worried about the fallout effects?
at which point I'm laughing and walk off to my sons class.
