Heard some older guys on the elevator talking operating systems. One guy turns to the other and says, "You know, we shouldn't have so many operating systems. There should just be one standard. Such as Microsoft's. Just have one. Not any of those other pirated operating systems out there. That would solve all the computer problems."

Yes, what an idiot.

No, your the idiot. He is right. Having 1 standardized OS would solve ALOT of problems.
Now, his reference to MS makes him an accomplise to the idiocy. So your not alone there ;)

I had a guy tell me that my $600 a month T1 for my office was a rip off because he could get a cable modem connection for $45 a month.

Bottom line is that dumb people don't realize that they are dumb.

Monopoly is never the answer. Competition > Monopoly b/c Innovation > Stagnant Technology.

Do you think Linux Distro's or MS would be working as hard on their next gen OS's if they didn't feel the need to compete?

The OP's qoute talks about solving PC problems, not advancing the current state of technology. From that stand point open source 1 OS is the PERFECT way to go.
