I've never ever tried to overclock any of the systems I've built in the past and just started posting and reading here @ the Anandtech forums. Seems like most of you peeps love to overclock your cpu/video card. Could anyone give me any insight on how to overclock your cpu/video card and if you'd recommend I give it a try with my current setup?!? Also what kind of effect does it have on the life of your cpu/video card?

The video card in your sig, is a pretty weak card compared to the rest of your system. Rather than overclock it, I would replace it ASAP if you play games.

To overclock a video card, you can just use one of many software programs to do this. Sometimes the drivers even have core and memory speed adjustments.

I don't think there is any reason to overclock the CPU you list in your sig at the present time.

Your computer has a HTT bus. You should be able to increase the speed of this bus, which would increase the clock speed of your CPU. You might have to increase your CPU voltage too, in order to make the CPU stable at a higher clock speed. You can test stability using utilities like Prime95.

To overclock your video card, you have to download a utility like RadClocker, which will allow you to increase the speed of your video card core and memory. You can increase incrementally until you find it stable in games and benchmarks like 3DMark2001.

Yeah I hate the damn 9200 I have I can't play Farcry at all with out the pos locking up for 1 min. I am looking into replacing the video card before Doom 3 comes out I'm looking to spending no more than $300..Seems like everyone if fond of the 6800? Right?

You can get a 6800 for around $290, and a 6800GT for around $340. The GT can overclock to Ultra speeds most of the time, BTW.

Yup. I fried my first GF3 overclocking. Luckily Newegg let me RMA it for a new one (I played dumb).

It's the same video card I'm using now (see my siggeh) Gainward Golden Sample GF3.

Melted my gpu fan on a Hercules 3D prophet years ago.

I tend to overclock cpu first then a year or two later, overclock existing gfx card in the same box to keep up with newer games.
