Overclocking.

I know I don't have the greatest board for overclocking, it's an ECS G31T-M

It does however have an overclocking option in the bios. I tried taking the FSB from 333 to 400 and I stopped getting video. I reset the Cmos and it booted again. Perhaps I could try 375 instead? so it would get me to 3 ghz? Should that be doable?

Unfortunately the cmos reset jumper is in what I consider a bad out of the way place and I would prefer to keep the resetting to a minimum. :) Otherwise I would just try it before asking. :)

Its normal, you have C1E/Eist enabled in the bios, it cuts the multi to 6 when CPU is idling to reduce heat/power. You can disable it as many do thinking it interferes with their OC, but I've seen no evidence of that.

Thanks, yeah I just started a game with CPUz running and it went to 8.

What about my overclocking question? :)

LOL, you edited your post. You were originally enquiring about the reduced mutli at 6 which I responded to. :D

hahaha, yeah when I saw the multi went to 8 when a game started I decided to completely change the topic.

Do you think 375 would be doable? Also when I raised the fsb to 400 before I had not changed my ram to 400, it was stuck on 333, I changed the ram to 400, would that make a difference?

Yes, never make huge jumps like from 333 to 400. Try at a lower setting. Also you may need to increase your PCIe frequency a couple notches or more. Really you should be reading the OC guide above, I could go on and on about what you may need to do or not do, good luck.

And btw, a 400fsb OC is very doable with your chip, you just have to take it one step at a time with the right settings. And settings vary with different rigs -- things you may have to adjust: CPU voltage, RAM timings, FSB, RAM, MCH volts, etc, some systems can do a 400fsb OC at default settings, but most usually have to make a few adjustments to the things I mentioned.

Thanks for the info, dang I'm not even sure if I can increase the voltage on my CPU with this bios hehe.

I'll look and see if thats possible, I just tried 375 and same thing, no video after I set it.

As an additional comment, while your chip is almost certainly capable of 400fsb your motherboard may not be. That's why it is recommended that you take small steps (5-10MHz fsb adjustments) with stability testing between each to determine how high you can go. Read the sticky thread on C2D overclocking before proceeding, there's a lot of great info in there.
