Hi guys i havent reallly got into the overclocking scene yet (Mainly because my old mobo bios wouldnt support it) and would like to seen as my athlon XP is starting to drag and i dont have the money to upgrade. I have

Asus A7N8X Deluxe on Rev 1002 beta 001 bios
Radeon 9700 Pro
256 Generic DDR 2100

I dont know how well the 1600 XP's are for overclocking but by my understanding pretty much anything can be overclocked. Could anyone with some experince give me a few hints and tips on how not to blow my computer up? Any help would be appreciated Thanks loads (BTW I already have the bios settings set to 'Agressive')

yeah pretty much anythign will OC but you have a couple of problems, your fsb is 266 on that chip and ur running 2100 ram, your ram will hold you back on any serious overclock if you do want a serious overclock your gonna need at least pc2700 ram which runs a fsb of 333 and will overclock some as well, make sure also that youve got good cooling, and as long as you dont touch your voltages you wont fry the chip good luck if u need more help keep posting

Ok thanks so what should i be looking at changing? I know the clock multiplier is one which was at 10.5, the Frequency is @ 133 can i up this to 166 or is that a no no? Anything else i can look at changing? Thanks!

With PC2100 RAM? No.

PC2100, theoretically, only supports a 133MHz bus. Mine has been able to go up to 146MHz--though I had to let up on the timings to get it that high--anything higher it'll crap out.

If your 1600+ is an AGOIA or AROIA you can almost certainly hit 166fsb, and as to the ram it's cheap now so find away to grab 2 256mb sticks for $73 shipped from Newegg so you can run synchronous@166fsb and take advantage of the DC-DDR because DC-DDR and running synchronous are what brings out the full performance of the Nforce2 chipset. If your strapped you need at least one more stick of 256mb 2100 so you can use dual channel synchronous@133fsb and a 256mb stick of 2100 shouldn't be more than 30$ shipped.

oh, also just noticed your RAM is generic: ewwwwwwwwww 🙂

Get some Corsair XMS now! 😀

You can always just multiplier overclock (and be cool like my brother 🙂)
