I know the board is not the best overclocker but thats what I have.(Gigabyte GA-7VAX, VIA KT400)

So if I understand this right as long as I don't overclock the ddr2100 is fine because you want to have your memory and fsb run at the same speed?

When I do want to overclock I should buy some ddr2700 change the memory speed to run at 166 instead of 133, this by itself won't change my performance any if at all?

After installing the new ram I then bump up the fsb at about 1mhz and run prime95 and keep an eye on the temps.

The memory I have now is 2x256mb of nanya ddr2100 should I even try and push it, if so how?

I would prefer not to add voltage because I have the stock hsf (Dynatron DC1206BM-L610) from what I have read it supports the xp2100 now my chip is the b version so it should run cooler, right?

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated, I have never o/c'd before so feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks,

Tom

That board will be alright for overclocking. Always leave the FSB and memory speed in synch, so set the mem/FSB ratio to 1:1 or 100%. You can try to overclock the memory you have now, but if you're not happy with it, pick up 1x512MB stick of PC3200. You can up the FSB by 5 at a time, and run memtest86, linked in the sticky thread at the top, to check your memory. Your board doesn't have a 1/6 divider for the FSB/PCI bus, so once you reach 170FSB, you should start increasing the multiplier instead of the FSB. Peace.

So why would I go with ddr3200 and not 2700, is that so I can push it past 166?

you would not benefit from the 3200 in that example, except for running it at aggressive timings.
I have gotten my crucial 2700 to 175 FSB, CAS2 stable. That's a 35mhz PCI, 70mmhz AGP. Not a mind altering speed for either of those busses.
