overclocking xp1800+

how high could i oc this chip and still be stable?? wut is the best mobo and heatsink/fan for this job???

no guarantee on how far it will overclock 🙂

some will get above 2ghz (thats xp2500+ in xp rating)
and others wont overclock much above the default setting

personally if i was building a new system right now i would get:
-epox 8k5a2 (based on the kt333 chipset, probably the best of the current chipsets. also a great overclocking board with the 1/5th pci divider)
-xp1600+ (the new 1600+ cpus are almost always able to overclock to 2100+ speeds.. this is nice cause thats a 166mhz fsb and with the 1/5th divider that keeps the rest of your system in spec)
-thermalright ax7 (a very good, hsf.. it uses the large 80mm fans so its not as loud and it does an excellent job of cooling)

I got on the Fry's deal for MSI KT266A board and retail XP1800. No change on the volatage, using Crucial DDR2100, and I was able to OC to XP2000 speed. I'm using a left over XP 2000 retail heatsink/fan. Its steady 45 degrees. I'm afraid to push it cause of the heatsink and fan.

the only reason a 1600+ is easier to overclock then an 1800+ is because 1600+ has a lower default multiplier and most 1600+ chips can run a 166mhz fsb with the default multiplier

to overclock the 1800+ you either need to unlock the cpu, or overclock the fsb to something less then 166mhz (the disadvantage of this is that the pci and agp bus will both be well out of spec. this can cause all kinds of potential problems with pci devices... usb is usually the first to stop working)

all the discussions are about either 1600+ or 1800+... does that mean 1700+ can not be unlock or something?????

they can all be unlocked (personally i use an xp1500+ overclocked to xp2050+ speeds)

most new athlon xp cpu's in the 1500-1900 range can be overclocked to about the 2100-2200 range (this are general numbers.. always exceptions)

taking this into acct the xp1600+ is in the sweet spot because you dont need to unlock it. it can be run on a 166mhz fsb and because of its 10.5x multiplier it gives xp2100 speed when run on the 166mhz bus

the reason 166mhz bus is important is because most new kt333 motherboards have a 1/5th pci divder... this means at 166mhz the new divider kicks in and it drops the pci and agp bus back in spec

so in otherwords on a 166mhz fsb your whole system is running in spec, just the cpu is running 2100+ speeds

so if you plan on unlocking it then there is no advantage of a 1600+ over any other cpu... with it unlocked you can just find the limit for your chip and set the fsb and multiplier at what ever suits your need 😀

omg.. this makes me felt even wrost! if there is no advantage of a 1600+ over any other cpu... i SHOULDA NOT paid that $2 bucks for that 1700+ and get 1600+

now i'm rEaLlY pissed...

so if i got that new epox board with a locked 1800+ how would i oc the fsb to 166 and stiill keep my usb, pci, agp,......... ports to work??? and if i get the fsb to 166 wut would be my speed?

I unlocked mine and it's runnig at 1,8 ghz, with 1.80 vcore 🙂
