overclocking XP1800+; factory fan sufficient?

Hey, Im looking to buy an XP 1800+ RETAIL processor, and I OBVIOUSLY :))) want to overclock it. I have an overclocked Tbird now, which was already unlocked for me, so I may have some trouble... hehe

So, will the fan it comes with be suitable for overclocking, even if I am using some Antec thermal compound, and my system temperature is pretty low?

How far out from 1.53 GHz could I possibly get this processor running?

And is it ok to overclock them just using the FSB? Im running an ECS K7S5A, and even with the new BIOS, i can only OC with the FSB, unless I were to do something on the processor itself....

any suggestions for overclocking?

Thanks so much! I really appreciate your great help!

I recently overclocked my 1800+ to 1.7GHz's. You will probably need more cooling because this processor runs hot @2v to the CPU. IMHO heat is the issue I can't get more MHz's out of this gem. Be sure to do the 'cooling' hack using WPCREdit and you will be surprised, my CPU is idling at about 2ºC cooler than room temperature. Unlocking takes some time, but it's really easy. Good Luck! :D

OK, what would you say about this fan I found on Newegg?

ARKUA TECHNOLOGY 7528. (Silence Solution) For AMD Black Anodized Heatsink w/ COPPER CORE + 70mm 4500rpm fan for AMD Socket 462 up to XP2000+ (Recommended for overclockers)
Dimension 75x75x62mm Weight 321g Fan 70x70x15mm Ball Bearing 4500rpm 12V 39 dBA 36.26 CFM 1 year warranty

Anyone know about it? It got some good reviews on their site, and rated 4 of 5 stars. People said it was quiet too, which is a big issue for me!

Can you tell me about this cooling hack you mentioned?

And what is the best (and easiest) way to unlock the processor. Has anyone tried the crayon trick, or is that not worth doing...

Personally I have a XP 1800+@ 1691mhz 146FSB. I haven't unlocked the cpu and don't plan to since its a retail CPU, it would void my 3 year warranty. However the cooling I have for it is an Alpha PAL 8045u with a large 80mm Delta fan that runs at top speeds of 10,000 RPM.

It runs great, vcery low temperature and I know it can definately go much higher, but the ram is not allowing it to do so currently. I plan on getting DDR PC--3200 RAM.

So does "unlocking" only refer to the frequency ratio? it would seem so from what Dexion just wrote...

also, what temps should be good for this cpu? right now i'm getting 37C (29C case temp) for a non-overclocked (would that just be "clocked") 1800+. it goes up to 42C (31C case) when gaming. in hotter weather i expect the cpu will run even hotter.... what is too hot?

thanks.

Yes, I have been wondering, if I just want to overclock using the FSB, do i even need to unlock the processor?????

ANd yea, what is too hot? Im gonna go as high as I can post, using my new fan, and I have to know if its TOO hot!

thanks!

oh, and what is that "cooling hack" Richardito mentioned? ive never heard of that...

Does anybody know if the program CPUICE works well? I use it every once in a while, and it seems to cool off my processor. How does it work...

Question.....? Don't you think your warranty is void the second you overclock the cpu?:Q

OK, now I am running an ECS K7S5A, and i have my Tbird 1.2 @ 1.35 using the FSB, because that is all the BIOS supports adjusting. How far could I push an XP 1800+ using the FSB? Would upgrading from my Geforce 2 MX200 to a Geforce 4 Ti4200 (which I was going to do anyway) help me in my efforts if im just using FSB? Or are there some good settings I can try out on the processor itself to adjust voltage and multiplier or what have you....

thanks, hope someone can help me out, im still trying to learn about the art of overclocking ;)

has anyone ever used trace tape to unlock the multiplier? i was checking out this kit when i found this trace tape at highspeedpc.com.

the trace tape seems like a much cleaner way to go, although a bit pricier... hmm... for $20 more, i probably could have gotten a 1900+...
