Ok, I'm getting one of the XP 1600's from newegg. I want to overclock it, not sure how much. Was thinking around 1.7 Ghz or so. But do I need to unlock it or something, I'm not really farmiliar with the term. Or is it simply a matter of setting the clock speeds in the bios? the mobo is an Epox EP-8K5A2+

It's not necessary to unlock ur CPU. Just go into the BIOS of ur motherboard, and change the FSB(Front Side Bus), Im not familiar with the Epox BIOS, but just change ur frequency from 133 Mhz to anything over that.
But GO UP SLOWLY, if it become unstable just up the vcore a little bit.

Good luck on ur OC!

Remember that that board has no PCI/AGP lock, so the higher you run your FSB, the more you run your PCI/AGP busses out of spec. However, the board has a 1/5 divider @ 166MHz FSB, so at 166MHz FSB it kicks in and puts your PCI/AGP busses back in spec. So if your OC hits a brick wall prior to 166FSB, just bump it up to 166FSB and see how it does.

I just finished unlocking my XP1600+ (AROIA core) cpu; using the procedure explained at www.tomshardware.com. i am new to all this; so got quick basic questions. I have epox EP-8K3A+ board.

1- if i change the multiplier in BIOS from 10.5 (with 133FSB) to anything else (same results; with or without upping the voltage); system wont boot; and will have to take out the CMOS battery; and put it back again (so it looses those settings..is there a better way to do that?) and system will boot up again.
now question is that why does it happen? and does that mean unlocking was unsuccessful; and have to redo it? or theres somethin else i can try?

2- i tried upping the FSB from 133 to 137 with cpu multiplier at 10.5; and its kina unstable (windows 2000 blue screens come up after few hours); if i bump it a little bit further than this; system wont come up and had to do the same painful process of removing cmos battery. shall i directly bump FSB to 166 or somethin? or what do ya guys suggest?

3- I am using 512MB PC2700 DDR (corsair cl2) ram. I have not changed any settings for it. do i have to try combination of chages there as well along with the cpu changes?

4- BTW how do i know if my motherboard has 1/5 divider; and if so @what MHZ?

5- What are your personal favorite websites for info on OC'ing; that u may wanna suggest? i looked around on the web; but most of them are sorta advance level, and cant find enuf of basic info.

Thanks a lot guys; Help greately appreciated.

I was wondering if the Epox 8k7a has a 1/5 divider? I bet not cause it is a bit old and all, but I was wondering cause I don't have the money to upgrade to another mobo right now. I would have to buy new ram to overclock my 1600+ anyway, and I couldn't afford both the mobo and ram right now.

i believe the 8k7a does have the 1/5 divider, and it's 39 bucks for a refur at newegg. YMMV on getting a working one.

I bought a 8kha+ refur from newegg with my 1600xp. it's running at (fsb 167)1.77 stable. aT 1.8 It's stable when i run benches and prime95 but locks when I encode vcd and surf net at the same time.

vcore at 1.85, and using samsung pc2700, on turbo setting.

oh yea, web: I'm pretty sure your board has a 1/5 divider. maybe you should try increasing the vcore and vdimm?
