Overclocking with just multiplier

Alright I have a first version A8V, so no pci lock. So should I drop the multiplier and do normal overclocking to get the fsb up, or should I use the multiplier. I have heard that it is more effective to OC with fsb, however it seems to me that it would be dangerous to increase bus speed on pci and agp. If I do overclock fsb, how much could I push the bus on PCI and agp before I start breaking stuff?

In your particular case, you're best to just bump up the multi as you already figured.

You could likely get to around 210-220 MHz before causing issues with the AGP/PCI, but i wouldn't risk it.

Just bump up the multi, & if you want a little more than that, use the HTT in careful moderation.

I know, it really pissed me off when I found out no pci-lock, since technically via advertised it as part of the chipset. I would upgrade but with agp/pci-e switch it makes it a little less than worthwhile. Thanks for the help

well, there are ways to obtain a lock with that board. however, you have to be careful because it can stop working without warning. find bios 1005.021. i dont know where you can get it, but someone probably has it. test the lock with clockgen. also, im not sure if this goes for the rev. 1 boards, but use the promise sata controllers, not the via. they have lock problems with the rev. 2. hope this helps.

Is something like that available for the K8V-X?

As for the original question: since the FX has an unlocked multiplier anyway just cranck that one up.

The gain from overclocked RAM is certainly not worth the risk of AGP/PCI corruption.
