Overclocking the Xeon e3110

Ok, so I have the Xeon e3110 in my new GA-EP35-DS3P board I got today. Posted fine. I know these things have some temp issues, but I'm pretty sure it's a readout problem. The BIOS reads idle temp as 29C, but CoreTemp reads as 43/39. I tend to believe the BIOS since my Tuniq Tower is cool to the touch.

Anyone OC this CPU yet - any tips?

yeah, the 6mb cache is nice - idling at 3Ghz 29C - I'll push it tomorrow - running orthos now.

Both temps are right. The BIOS is measuring Tcase, and CoreTemp is reading Tjunction. Usually, Tjunction is 15C higher than Tcase.

73C is the max Tcase temp that Intel specifies.

That means that Tjunction can go to as far as 88C, and still technically be within specifications. It's probably not a great idea though.

I have my E2140s running at 85C, maxed out at 3.2Ghz at 1.425v (BIOS).

I think that in the bios the CPU is under a 30% load or so, hence temps are higher in there, then they are when you are just idling in the desktop, when cpu usage is nearly 0%. Or am I wrong ?

Err... what HSF are you using on those? I ran my E6400 at the same speed and BIOS voltage. Max Tjunction I got under 2x Prime95 was ~57C.

85C? dayum... I have a 45nm core, but mine is Prime stable at 3.60 right now with 1.30V maxing out at 57/59 with Tuniq Tower.

CoolerMaster HyperTX2. The stock Intel cooler was at least 10C hotter.

the max on Coretemp for this CPU says 105C

I would run my e8400 at 85-88C when benching 4.5ghz

maybe on a good xp sp2 OS, on vista, you can literally be doing nothing and staring at the destkop while cpu usage sits around 30% and the memory footprint is 1.3gb

what temp do you guys think is a good temp for 24/7 use of 1-2 years?

low as you can go, and not over 75-80C while priming. Keep in mind you'll never see those temps again til you goto a 8hour dvd encoding session. ( maybe dvd encoding sessions dont take 8 hours anymore, but thats what 2-passers took on my xp2400 when divx first came out in 99. )

well I'm at 3.80Ghz with no prob - 1.30V, steady Prime, 59C MGH +1 and bus +1.

To get to 4GHhz I had to up volts to 1.375, GMH +2.5 and bus +2.5. I still was getting Prime errors so I'll just leave it at 3.8 for now until I get the itch again...
