Overclocking the X1900 XT

I'm having trouble with overclocking my Radeon X1900 XT. My goal is to see if it is stable at XTX speeds and, if so, leave the speeds there. What's the most reliable program to do this and how does it work? I was using ATI Tools earlier and let it do the auto-overclock and the program crashed my computer when it hit a certain clock (something like 550 mhz core on the 2d).

I'm so confused at this point that I'm not sure where to see/set my 3d clocks...

You do not want to overclock 2D speeds. No need for it. Overclock the 3D speeds ( try ATI Tray Tools ) 3D clocks show when you enter a game. Minimize the game ( I think ) and then set it ( I think )...someone else may know a little more than I
