Overclocking the Penryn

So I'm getting ready to pick out my mobo and processor; been thinkin IP35-e and 4GB DDR2-800 to go with a 2180.

However I'm unsure as to how the upgrade to Penryn is going to work. I drop in the processor; but say I wanted to overclock it? Will I be able to? Or would 1066 ram be needed to get anywhere? If so, then it would make sense to get a 1066 board and 1066 ram now. What would be a good 1066 overclocking board to get?

Err, DDR2 RAM is running at half the speed of its rating, that DDR2-800 runs at 400MHz. If you want to run your processor higher than 400 MHz, a 20% overclock from the 333MHz of Penryns, you will have to also overclock your RAM or buy 1066 RAM, which runs at 533MHz.

When the first Penryns are out, I think they'll be difficult to overclock because of the 1333FSB and the low multiplier. I really hope Intel releases a 1066FSB Penryn to make life easier.

Intel has a long history of being supportive to the enthusiast community...
Multipliers locked, expensive Extreme version CPUs, etc.
I'm sure they'll do all they can to help their customers get higher price CPU performance out of cheaper processors.

Hope is just on the horizon

I don't know about quads, but I believe there's supposed to be a 1066 FSB Wolfdale core with 2M L2 cache at some point. Maybe later on, like in March. The successor to the E4xxx series basically I guess.

you can adjust the ratios (fsb to memory), so even ddr2 800 should let you get decent clocks out of penryn (assuming you are not too worried about memory speed).

Yeah I still remember the shock (more than 10 years ago) when I discovered that the Multiplier on the Pentium 133 is locked.

I still have PTSD from it.
