Overclocking the PCI-E bus bios level?

I just read an article comparing Northbridges with full 16x16 lanes to 8x8, to 16x4 that mentioned overclocking the PCI-E bus as to improve fps as part of a digressing statement. First I read a long time ago never to overclock the PCI-E bus in the bios. Now I hear this. What is the consensus on this!?

Generally, I think it is a bad idea to overclock the PCIE bus.

On some motherboards (such as the Asus P5K) the PCI bus / storage controller clock frequency is synchronized to the PCIE bus clock. If you are overclocking the PCIE bus, you are also overclocking the PCI bus along with the clock for the storage controller. I think HDD's cannot tolerate a higher than standard clock frequencies which may lead to data corruption.

In my case, when I accidentally forgot to lock the PCIE bus frequency when overclocking, my computer wasn't able to detect any of the HDDs...

There are some MOBOs that can do this. People report success with 5-20% increaces. It's just another overclocking "tool".
