Overclocking the 1.6a/1.8a, how much of a difference will pc2700 memory make?

I'm about to purchase (probably) a gigabyte 8IEXP or an epox 4g4a+ to overclock either a 1.6a or a 1.8a P4 (I was going to go 1.8A, but I hear about people having trouble overclocking them and that some aren't as good, is this widespread?). I am stuck on the memory though. How much of an increased overclock can I expect with pc2700 DDR? Is it worth the extra $20 from crucial?

TIA guys 🙂

Yes get it...If not so the pc2100 doesn't limit the oc but to make the oc performance wise worth it you need to feed the p4 the more bandwidth....

The 1.8's are as good as the 1.6's...I have had two great 1.8's...The 1.8 has higher muliplier so the fsb is going to be limited to lower level. The newer 1.8's theoretically should hit a higher final clockspeed then the 1.6's...The 1.6's have been discontinued now for a bit and intel has uped to the p4 2.8ghz....These 1.8's should strt getting to those numbers.

My 1.6 s an extreme rarity from what I can tell...My 1.8 got to 2.63ghz and it wasn't the newest stepping and was from the month of june for pack date.

The knock on the 1.8 is with intel chipset mobos it is no lock to get to 150-160fsb to obtain 333mhz ddr or pc3200 levels...I only did get to 146fsb so I was very close to 400mhz with 387mhz ddr or pc3100 level...

Ok, so DDR 2700 it is. Next question 🙂

I'm picking up a case from directron along with the mobo (looks like the Epox 4g4a+ unless I change my mind again, but I think I'd rather forgo the firewire for the newer chipset), they've got pc2700 for $70/256mb. They say it's either micron (crucial) or samsung. Are both equally good for oc'ing?

Once again, thanks in advance

the limit depends on the ram or the cpu...but typical pc2100 can hit around 150fsb...you will have to find out yourself...but if you are planning on overclocking..get pc2700 or above

Get the EPoX board, as I'm having a lot of trouble with my Gigabyte 8IGX. Biggest problem is that you can't set the memory to 333 when running at 133 MHz BUS (if you are using a 400 MHz BUS based processor); so it gets very unstable. And advanced chipset settings (memory timing for instance) are hidden (need to press CTRL+F1 in BIOS to show them).

Have fun with your new comp.
