Overclocking Temps

I'm running a Q6600 @ 3.0 GHz, stepspeed disabled with 4GB (2 x 2GB) OCZ SLI RAM @ 1002 MHz. Speedfan says:

CPU 36C
Core0 51C
Core1 49C
Core2 46C
Core3 62C

Why is my CPU temp so much lower than the Core temps and why is my Core3 so much higher? Do you think my fan isn't sufficient? (Used to be 32C with stepspeed on) or do you think I didn't apply AS5 properly? I applied AS5 by putting enough so that I could spread it evenly over the entire CPU but I've seen AS5's tutorial that says I should just put a line over the CPUs covering the cores.

Judging by the extreme temperature difference I'd say either your system isn't truly idle, or more likely one of the retention pins isn't fully through the MB. Did you remove the board to re-install the heatsink? It's very difficult to make sure all 4 pins 'click' without visual inspection of the back.

It's also possible you put on way too much AS5.

My heatsink doesn't require removal of the motherboard to be put back on. It's 4 clips are screwed onto the back of the motherboard and the heatsink connects onto the clips with 2 screws on the top and bottom in the middle of the clips. Do you get that or should I post a picture?

I redid my AS5 with the link I'd posted earlier and it's doing a lot better.
CPU is 30C
Core 0 45C
Core 1 45C
Core 2 38C
Core 3 39C
Core 59C

My system isn't actually idling, in Speedfan Core 4 has a constant .5 to 10% CPU Usage whereas my other cores are idle. Any way I can see why this is?

By the time I finished typing this, Core got up to 62C. What is the Core on Speedfan?

Have you tried another temperature reporting program, like CoreTemp? The Q6600 will have have different temperatures, especially because it's two separate dies under the IHS. It looks like your second application of AS5 went much better. I don't know that much about SpeedFan though, so I can't tell you what the "Core" temp is referring to.

Coretemp says:
Tj Max: 100C
Core#0 52C Low: 51C High 55C Load 0-5%
Core#1 50C Low: 50C High 54C Load 0-5%
Core#2 46C Low: 46C High 49C Load 0-5%
Core#3 47C Low: 47C High 55C Load 0-5%

Speedfan though reports CPU Temp at 36C now. Only thing different I did was stand the computer back up and close the case.

Ok. So I had a spare motherboard, the P5Q-E that I needed to test. I used the same processor and a Gigabyte 3D Rocket fan. I kept it outside the case on a anti static bag with just the processor, video card, 2GB RAM. The CPU temp was 16-18 C idling. Why is the temperature significantly higher in my original board?

BTW, I didn't reapply AS5 when I switched the processor and fan.

overclock temp is used to speed up the computer beyond the manufacturer's specifications in order to run faster. common in the gaming world, overclocking the cpu is accomplished by changing the clock ratio of the frontside bus in the bios setup.
