Overclocking-related "streaking" image problems

I have a Gainward 128mb Ti4200. I can OC it to 300/590 before seeing any memory-related "snow" type errors. However, beyond 275/540, it has this other image problem. On the high-res 3DMark tests, and very occasionally on the low-res tests, you can randomly see long, thin polygon of color (usually black) streaking (usually diagonally) down the screen. These "streaks" always end in a point towards the bottom of the screen, but their shape at the top of the screen is jagged or spiked. They tend to appear in the scenes with alot of motion, but sometimes they just happen randomly in low-motion scenes as well.

Sorry if this problem has been covered elsewhere, but I have looked for posts with similar issues to mine and have not found any... this might be a common problem, but I have not seen it described before in descriptions of video card OC'ing.

If anyone has seen this problem and could explain it's cause, or point to a web site or thread that would be great. I am mostly wondering if this is a side effect of overclocking the memory, core, or both. Or if it is a totally different problem altogether. I would like to push this card harder, so if I could figure out a way to sidestep this error it would be great!

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you're trying to overclock too high with the 300/590.

You said anything beyond 275/540 gives artifacts/streaking. Thats a sign of overheating, and a side effect of overclocking.

If the game runs fine at 275/540, and gets all those streaks on anything higher, then that is your limit.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I just have never heard that problem discussed before on an video card OC forum. (Whereas it is easy to find references to "snow" and stretched textures). Well thanks for the info.
