Overclocking question, is this safe to do?

I am having a minor problem with my dvd drive and I suspect it could be the overclock causing it. I am currently running at 4.2 on the system in my sig. I am running completely stable. To figure the problem out, I need to go back to stock settings.

My question is when I put it back to 4.2, can I go there in one big jump or do I need to gradually move up? Is that too much of a shock to the cpu?

If it's stable at 4.2 GHz, you should be able to return to that speed at anytime. If you're concerned, stress the CPU when you return to 4.2.

why do u still use a dvd drive.???

If i had to pick between using my dvd drive,, and say 200mhz on my cpu..

I am sure lots of people still use a dvd drive. I use it quite often to install programs, games, backup my files and whatnot. What kind of question is that?

Once I get the problem figured out, I am going back to 4.2ghz. I do not plan on staying at stock speeds.

im trying to see how the DVD drive could fail an Overclock.

Or how the overclock can fail the DVD drive.

The only way i can see even that remotely happening is if his pci-e multi was unlocked @ 100mhz, and somehow he scaled it up as high as 120mhz.

But if thats the cause, then his HDD's and everything on his ICH controller for that matter should of failed flat out.

Translation... OP, your DVD drive blows... replace that.

Ok let me explain this situation. There is nothing wrong with the DVD drive itself, I will explain later. I am having trouble trying to print a lightscribe label with this drive and every program I have tried gives me an error.

So I took the drive out and installed it in another machine running Windows XP. I was able to burn a lightscribe label with no problems. So there is nothing wrong with the drive. I install it into my machine in my sig running Windows 7 and I used the same software as I did on the XP machine and it does not work. As soon as it starts it gives me an error.

I know the programs I used work with Windows 7 because I have been able to create a lightscribe label in the past.

I created a thread about this and someone suggested turn the settings back to stock. I too thought that an overclock could not cause problems with a dvd drive but what do I know.

Do you try to update your firmware? Got a LG burner and when I pass from Windows XP to Windows 7 I got some problems with the burning. After I look on the dvdrom website, I see there's an update firmware for compatibility with Windows 7. Dunno if you already try that but it's work a try.

Doesn't sound like a hardware issue at all. I'd rule out the OC just to give yourself peace of mind, then move on with the troubleshooting.

Well I just put the cpu back to stock settings for the most part. I did not put every setting in the bios to stock settings, just the cpu settings. I am still not able to burn a lightscribe label. I didn't think that was the problem but it was worth a shot.

I think my next step is going to be reinstalling Windows unless someone has a better idea.

How do I find out what version of firmware I am running now? I just recently updated the firmware but that was before I installed it in a different machine. Maybe the firmware got changed to an older version.

I just noticed that the driver date for the drive is 2006, a bit outdated I should say. But I can not find where to update the driver. I went to Samsung's website and the only downloads they had was the user's manual and the firmware. I tried the firmware but it said I do not have a compatible product.

Just wanted to let you guys know I got the problem fixed. It was hooked up to a sata 3 connector on the motherboard, I moved it to a sata 2 connector and it works fine now.

How do I go about updating the driver for it since it is not on their website? I guess since it is working fine, there is no need to worry about the driver.
