OVERCLOCKING Q6600

Hi,

Building a kickass system here... i have:

DFI UT p35 T2R
GEIL Estoria DDR800 2x1GB
Vigor Gaming Monsoon II Cooler
INTEL Core 2 Quad Q6600

my issue, after overclocking to 3.6ghz /w 1.6volts, i am running prime95 on each core. and while its running, within 3 mins or so it will drop from my settings of 8x450 to 6x450 changing the clock from 3600 to 2700. This is observed using CPU-Z.

Is this CPU throteling because of the heat? it is right around 70-75c at 1.6volts (I can go lower volts, just testing with max volts to see how fast we can go.)

Any other ideas?

Wierdness... also, Windows reports it as running at 4.05Ghz.... which just seems odd... come to think of it... 4.05ghz is 9x450mhz (perhaps because the default multi of a Q6600 is 9x ???)

1.6v ?!?!?!? are you trying to give your chip a pre-mature death? Yeah, sounds like it's throtting, not suprising with that much voltage at those temps..

EDIT: Also, what are you using to measure your temps? If it's not core temp, your temps are probably closer to 90C..

using 3 temp monitors. Vigor monsoons on device monitor, speedfan, and smartguardian.

this is only been running at 1.6 for about an hour. i got it up to 3.15Ghz on stock volts

I dont agree. I've clocked others much farther than they've ment to go and had em run like champs.

That said, right now i have it at 1.45v 3.5Ghz, hasnt dropped multi's. Would not run stable at 1.5v 3.6Ghz hav'nt tried 1.48 3.6ghz. Will do that if i get the 3.5 stable. Thanks

Well i am keeping it at 1.45volts 3.5ghz. Got it at 9x390 with my ram running at DDR975. All props go to the GEIL Estoria DDR800 Ram chips for running stable at DDR975

btw. It's running at 60c /w 4xPrime95

None of those programs will report the core temp properly..you aren't running at 75c you are running at 90c..the Monsoon is not much better than an air cooler..it's not a real peltier cooler. You should most certainly be throtting with those super high temps, and the super high voltage..

Use core temp to see what your real temps are..

Now thats a lot more reasonable, and still an excelent overclock. You are still really running closer to 75c on the cores, but thats pretty good for air cooling.

im sorry... i have no comment for this.

1.6 on a vigor monsoon which is crappier then the TR120Extreme, which still has a max safe cpu range of 1.45V

Ummmm..... you want to play with 1.6V you need this:

wow, that cooler looks like a blast. I think I can sacrifice 200mhz-300mhz for the added trouble and weight of a water cooler, but defiantly something I'd like to get my hands on someday.
