Overclocking PIII450 for first time

I new to overclocking, and for my first shot I'm trying to overclock my P3 450. I have an ABIT BF6 motherboard, and I recently flashed the latest bios drivers. I think that I have generic memory, and currently the BIOS has it set at 100MHz bus speed.

My question is this... Is overclocking primarily dependant on the temperature of the processor? If I can keep the bus speed at 100MHz, will the only limitation to overclocking be the processor?

The P3 450 can't be clocked in any other way but raising the FSB. Raising it to 112Mhz will give 4.5 X 112 = 504. The P3 450 isn't much of a clocker though...
Test if she runs stable, mine did (most of the time.)
Teh memory might cancel on you, and if so, there really ain't much you can do.
Heat is result of o'cing and yes it is one of the factors to take into consideration, avoid by having a decent HSF and by having good airflow in the case.

Dude, are you smoking crack or something? The PIII450 can do some NICE overclocking. I set my friend up with a PIII450@550 with default votage! Take a look at the cache on the chip. If it shows 4ns cache then you're almost (90%) guaranteed to hit hit 550. If it has 3.6 or even 3.3ns cache then you have a VERY good chance of hitting 600+. 150 overclock doesn't seem that great now but back in the day, this was considered a GREAT overclock. To overclock to 550+ you're going to need some PC133 ram (PC150 or Mushkin rev2 PC133 would be better if you are going to push past 133MHz FSB with CAS 2 settings. Crucial PC133 CAS 2 memory is good too.). You'll also need a good heatsink. It doesn't have to be something crazy but a GlobalWin VOS32 will do VERY nicely. You might be able to get by with Intel's heatsink but I ALWAYS like to keep my CPU as cool as possible (within reason 😉 ). You can always make some cache spacer for the cache to make contact with the heatsink but this is optional. I hit 550 with my friend's with NO cache spacers and that bad boy runs 24/7 ROCK SOLID! 🙂

And hovenas is right, your ONLY choice is to increase the FSB to overclock a PIII. That is why I suggested the memory above. 😉

My motherboard's bios offers the changes in clock multiplier... if I change the multiplier of the FSB in the bios, will that change not really take effect? Does anyone know how to get around this with some hardware modifications, or is the P3 450's multiplier locked on the silicon die?

The multiplier is locked and there is no work around on Intel processors.
