Overclocking performance?

I've heard of people overclocking the xp 1700's to speeds above 3 ghz. Now, I got a P4 3.0 GHZ (800 mhz FSB) from a friend that was strapped for cash as it was a hell of a deal. The thing i'm trying to figure out is should I keep that P4, or sell it and get a Athlon XP to OC the hell out of, and use the extra couple of (hundred) bucks to get other things.

Is there anyone around that has a good XP 1700 OC or a OC'd P4 3.0 w/800 FSB that knows about what their performance is?

Thanks!

umm, if you want 3 ghz out of a 1700+, then you must have some sort of phase change cooling (ie promitia). i would keep the 3.0C and be happy with it

i would keep it. 1700s hitting 2.4 is very possible, but am i yet to see one @ 3ghz on air or watercooled

Definatly keep that P4. The 3.0C is one of the best on the maket right now and if you got a killer deal on it then keep it. The 3.0C has a 15x multiplier and the average OC on a P4C is about 250fsb, that is an actual speed of 3750. I doubt you would ever get that high on water cooling as that is really really damn fast but that would probably outperform an Athlon 64 on current 32bit.

the average OC of a 2.4/2.6 may by 250 mhz fsb, but certainly not for a 3.0C.

the average OC on a 3.0C is about 235 mhz fsb (~3500 mhz)

Keep the 3.0C, it's a great cpu. You will not get as high fsb as with the slower chips but you'll still get great performance because of the mhz. As for changing to Athlon, well you might get a similar perfoming system but would it be worth the hassle? Plus with oc'ing nothing is guaranteed, the 3.0C is a good performer from the start, much better than the Athlons that usually oc well in case you get a bad cpu.

That is what I was meaning with I doubt yoyu will ever get that high. I have never seen anyone bother getting the 3.0 none the less OC it.
