Overclocking Opteron 2xx 940's

Has overclocking 940's ever been something that people have done? obviously we want maximum stability with server CPU's. But from everything I've seen of the amd64 and opty series, they shouldnt have any stability problems whatsoever at around 200-500mhz OC. Starting from 1.8ghz-2.2ghz.

2nd question. What would be a good aftermarket CPU HSF to slap on a 2cpu setup

Just curious why you're going with an essentially dead platform. Are you getting the CPUs/motherboard used?

Even then, Socket F CPUs and dual-socket motherboards are relatively cheap.
 
thats a good question.

I suppose the answer is that the amd64 is still more than enough power to run a server of the calaber we're looking for, and if its cheaper.. why not?

The core archatecture did not change except to allow for DDR2 and suposedly someday there will be affordable 4core CPU's...

For tried and true servers of socket 940 vs unstable bioses, new and more expensive socket F... and with a rather small preformance increese offered by DDR2... the cost\preformance ratio is just not good enough to go with Socket F.

you can buy a tyan k8w for $520 new from newegg or $150 used off ebay... Gosh.. wonder what I'll do... servers do not get as much mean wear and tear becuase normally they sit in corners and crunch numbers, people take care of em cause they cost more, they buy PSU's that work and have surge protectors. SO, i guess its good for me to put it in words.. for myself also, because I've never really considered socket F untill now. Thanks

I oc'd 2x 265's to 2.5ghz.....I was using an Asus K8N-DL mobo. It had options to raise vcore +.05v. I had to set it to 214fsb in the bios and then do the rest with clockgen. It ran folding at home non stop and with no errors for 4+ months.

My other box had 2x 270's which could not oc one lick. it was on an Iwill AMD 8131 chipset. no bios options and clockgen and all other windows based fsb ocers did not work.


I can tell you one thing......

In most of the test I ryun and granted they were not server test (some were extensive fpu test) my C2D boxes oced to 3.2ghz doubled up my 2x 270box...meaing 2 cores at 3.2ghz was beating my 4 cores at 8ghz in the test I was running.

If you are going to overclock, definitely go with an Asus dual-socket motherboard (as Duvie mentioned).

The type of heatsink/fan depends on the motherboard, but I would recommend a pair of Zalman 9500s. Those are small enough that they can sit side-by-side without a problem, and the fan is inset into the heatsink. Other heatsinks with lots of overhang (like the Ninja or Tuniq) may not work on motherboards with sockets near each other.

You don't have much choice in regards to RAM. Server motherboards will require ECC Registered DDR; just get PC3200, any brand.

If you are seriously thinking about a dual-socket system, I would strongly suggest you look at spending a little extra money on a Socket F motherboard (like the Asus KFN5-D SLI). Buy one (or two) Socket F CPUs to hold you over until summer, and then take you have an easy upgrade path to Barcelona quad-cores.

Otherwise listen to what Duvie said, and pick up a cheap 965 motherboard with a Core 2 Duo and overclock it. Then when Intel releases cheaper quad-cores later this year, you can upgrade with a CPU swap.

well, i literally just bought the Tyan K8W i was talking about and 2xOpty846's

however the ram I might be interested in if you have a dirt cheap price on it. I'm watching a DDR266 2gb set that'll be going for around $50.

if you're willing to give that good of a price sign me up, otherwise I'm a poor man trying to build a company from the ground up with no spare cash 🙂
