Um, I am going to try and overclock an old Pentium 266, Can someone give me advice on
the best way to go about it.

here is the setup:

Abit VA6
PC-100 RAM 128mb
Voodoo 3 3000
P 266

Is the core multiplier locked?
If so, can i up the frequency to a stable level and then just stop there?
Do I need, or should I overclock the Voodoo?

Thanks!

ah, the old 266. :)

This was my first OC; on a POS (from an overclocking point-of-view) SuperMicro you dont have many options. One jumper pulled, and its running PII-266@400w/100fsb, stock cooling, rock stable, going strong for years now (dont recommend stock cooling tho...i just got lucky with good thru-case airflow).

BUT, I know nothing about that abit board.

From what I've seen elsewhere, these are pretty OC'able processors.

I paid $800 for a p2-400 that turned out to be a p2-266!That was a long time ago, right when the 400 came out.Quite a few 266 parts were sold as 400 parts. If you set the bus speed to 100,your cpu will run at 400.

thanks everyone. I will attempt the oc tonight. I am getting pretty excited! Sounds like alot of people have had great success with these ol chips!

One question, if so many people can get these up to 400, why arent more people buying them ?

they sell for around 30 dollars...

If I had to buy a cheap chip, this would be the one...Although those durons are a pretty sweet deal if you can get them up to 850~900!!!

well, i could only get a about 35fps in Q2, 18/HL "back in the day" on that 400...now im sitting at about 90 in q3, 55 in TFC, and i tell you, id never go back. i always thought that hitting 35 was all i would ever need. boy was i wrong. besides, the processor is the cheapest component in the system, but it doesnt have to be *THAT* cheap.

Nearly all 266's can reach 400. The 266's were the first to use the .25 micron process on intel processors

Is there a problem with using a PCI video card as opposed to a AGP?

can you interchange a pci and agp card?

I'm not familiar with your specific mobo but I bet the PCI/AGP question is moot. I doubt the board has an AGP slot.

I overclocked a friend's Gateway PII233(or 266, I can't remember which). It had a clock multiplier jumper. The highest I could get was 300. Not bad I suppose considering.

As for AGP vs. PCI, it doesn't make much difference now.

Im sorry, I wasnt clear...

The result of our overclocking was this:

Took the Chip out of an old IBM system that had a bios which did not allow overclocking. The Chip read in at P2 266 on the bios. When we slapped it into my Abit VA6 mobo, it booted up as a P233!

Successfully oc'd to 333 using the Voodoo 3 3000 AGP.

However, when I pulled the AGP card and put in the PCI V3 3000, The system would not boot up at anything other then 266...

I did check all the settings in the bios to make sure that it recognized the pci card and not the agp.

So, I never got it to work at anything higher than 266 with the pci card, and I was thinking that was the problem...am I wrong?
