Hi guys. My next upgrade (when its all released) is gunna be an 865/75 chipset and probs a new PIV 2.4C GHz w/hyperthreading. The thing is, Im wondrin as these new chips r gunna be 200mhz fsb QP, whats the o/cing potential gunna be? As the only thing to get more outta the chip will be to up the fsb on the mobo - how much higher than 200mhz do ya think the 865/75 mobo's will go?

Maybe its probs best to go for the 865/75 mobo, and stick with a 2.4b chip, as the multiplier will be much higher and you will probs get a much better o/c.

Any thoughts??

the ram will be severly limiting the oc
even if you put the the 4:3 divider, you'll see a performance hit
so i'd say get a 133MHz FSB P4 if i were you

He said he wanted Hyperthreading,so the 133fsb chips are not an option.

the ram should be able to be set independently of the fsb, as it is with many mobos now, so that shouldnt be a factor. On Budman's point, Im willing to sacrifice the Hyperthreading for a 2.4b that i can have running at 3gig+, compared to a hyperthreaded one that i can only run at 2.5 or so.

any more thoughts??

the point im trying to get across is that, since the the new chip will be 800fsb, then the processor rating will be determined by the multiplier and the fsb. Take the 2.4c chip. It will get its rating by: 200x12

This means that to get an overclock over the rated speed, then the fsb must be set to greater than 200fsb. i.e if i managed to get the mobo to 212fsb, then id overclock the chip to 2544mhz.

What im trying to say is that i dont see the boards handling fsb speeds much over 200mhz. This means that you will be seriously limited when overclocking the new 'c' stepping chips. I dont know for sure this will be true.....thats what im trying to find out.....

therefore i see it as a trade-off. Sacrifice HT and get the 2.4b with 133fsb, and have loadsa mobo fsb headroom to get the chip as high as possible!!

does anyone see what im tryna say?? :)

yep ~ exactly.

you will need a higher mplier (read: more expensive) chip to get a decent overclock.
todays ram will have a hard time running past 450dcddr so well be limited to a 225-233fsb overclock.
sorry, but i dont concider an underclocked mem ratio to be an option ~ that would be stupid.

for now OCing 533 chips will suit us until 1mb cache is on the 800 chips.
then we wont really have a chioce but to go 800.

Out of curiosity, what effects can we expect from the addition of the 1mb cache? Also, the 1mb cache will not be available with this first batch of 800 p4's right?

im hearing conflicting reports about the 1mb cache so im not really sure

1mb cache should make a 3g perform like a 3.5g +/-
