hi guys,
I'm new here and juss wanted to intorduce myself, name is harold and im a big car buff and like working on them, but recently i started a new hobby with computers. I've built my own computer with a help of my friend. Right now i have an asus A7N8X deluxe motherboard with 1GB of ram with an AMD athlon XP 2000+. Well my friend has told me about overclocking but im still new to it and i was wondering if anyone could help me out with the basics of it and help out a newbie overclock his machine. I would appreciate all the help.

-thx in advance,
Harold

Overclocking is basically accomplished by raising the HTT in bios, the CPU speed is determined by HTT(fsb) x cpu multi. I suggest you read thru Zebos quick and dirty OC guide which is stickied at the top of this forum. If you don't understand anything post back with specific questions

He has an XP, which is quite bit simpler to overclock than a 64. Basically this is what you have to know:

FSB = Front-side bus = is the bus that connects the cpu to the northbridge. The memory speed is also derived from this.

CPU frecuency = FSB x CPU multiplier.

Some Athlon XPs are multiplier unlocked which means that you can just raise the multiplier to overclock them.

The other way to overclock them is to raise the FSB. Be aware that there are many things on your motherboard that MAY rely on your FSB speed, so sometimes you might get some non-cpu-related instability from raising the frontside bus.

This brings me to the next point: Ram. If you raise your FSB bus you will overclock your ram, Not all different brands and models of ram can overclock the same. From what I understand (I'm not sure about this) memory dividers are pretty worthless on the althon xp side, so if you need to overclock with the FSB then you might be better off just buying some better ram.

Ie:

If your FSB is 166 by default that means it's supposed to work with DDR333 (166x2). If you want to overclock the fsb then you'll probably be better off buying some ddr400, which will work well even if you dont get to 200FSB.

well i got ddr400 which add up to 1GB, now to overclock i juss enter the bios and mess around with the cpu multipler and FSB, now do u recommend a certain to do this like a procedure so i won't over do it? Also, i know heat is going to be an issue, do u recommend anything for cooling off the cpu? Thanks again in advance, appreciate the help.
