Overclocking my rig not in the cards?

Hey folks,

So I got a shiny new 3800+ Toledo X2 to replace my 3500+ Venice.

You will see my other system specs below.

I was hoping that a moderate overclock would be very easy, at least 200-400MHz. I have a competent CPU cooler - a Zalman CNPS-7000AlCu. Indeed, heat does not seem to be a limiting factor for me.

Strangely, when I do a simple overclock, I get intermitent hard system shutdowns.

Procedure:
Drop HT to 4x
Drop RAM speed to 100MHz (in my BIOS that means you set the highest divider), and set CAS3 /1T, other SPD timings to take RAM out of the equation
Bump up FSB to 220, leaving voltages stock and test.
Increase 5 MHz at a time, and see how things go.

I was able to get the system up to 240 MHz FSB easily, and didn't want to push things. I got the RAM up to 333MHz (which is really 400 MHz after the FSB boost), and things looked good. I passed an overnight Prime95 on both cores, with temps in the high 50s when I checked in the morning.

All good, I thought, but then I started encountering occasional shutdowns without warning. So I figured, maybe some vCore would help. I boosted it a bit, but still occasional shutdowns.

I backed down to a 220 FSB, and was again 2x prime95 stable overnight, with temps in the 50s (stock vCore). But still, shutdowns persisted occasionally.

I finally gave up and put everything back to stock.

What do you guys think is happening? It seems like thermal shutdown is kicking in, but I disabled it in my BIOS.

Maybe my PSU is just not enough? It's a good 3 years old, and is a 450W Antec that has been a workhorse that took overclocking my 3500+ to 2.6 without issues for a long time. I eventually stopped that due to noise considerations.

Suggestions would be appreciated!

I just replaced my 3500+ with a X2 3800 Toledo and I'm currently running at 2.55GHz at default voltage. I also have a KN8-SLI. My temps were a bit of a concern so I lapped the heatsink(AMD Opteron 4 heatpipe) and the processor. There is a 5 to 7 degree difference between core 0 and 1 with 0 being the highest. When I run ORTHOS core 1 runs about 2 to 4 degrees higher than 0. I had some shutdowns like you are describing and set my shutdown temp to 75 degrees in bios and it hasn't happened since. My max temp is running around 65 on 1 and 63 on 0. Idle is about 43 on 0 and 38 on 1. A little high so I'll probably replace the heatsink/fan. Your problem really sounds like a thermal shutdown even though you've got it disabled in bios.

I'd go with cas 2.5/2T. You should get more stability, regardless of what the recommended memory timings are. And you won't notice that much difference in performance.

Hmm.. well I tried setting shutdown temp to 75, and warning to 70. I set timings to Cas3/2t, and put FSB at 220, and HT at 4. It was rock solid stable for hours of Battlefield 2.

Then I was browsign the web and it shuts down!

I noticed before that it would usually fail when I was idle or almost totally idle. I dont think it ever shut down on full load, which is the opposite of what you would think......

I dunno man, 450W for 4 hd's, 7800 gt, oc-ed cpu, how many fans you runnning ? It IS 3 years old, not saying thats it, but it very well could be.
Did you try running memtest ? Do you get bsod, or just tick, and system reboots ?

Memtest stable.

No BSOD, no reboot. Just a hard shutdown with no warning.

I have 2 120mm fans at low RPM, and a 92mm on my Zalman CPU cooler. The video card has a Zalman cooler on it too. Everything is running at low RPM all the time (I'm a silence nut).

I really suspect the PSU. Toledo uses ~2x the power of a Venice (110W vs 65W), and I know my PSU is already very stressed. I will get a new one sometime next month when I can afford it :)

You definitely need a better psu. To find out if your psu's at fault, try unplugging all but one of your hard drives, and all of your optical drives.

If one of the going-out-of-business CompUSAs is near you, see if they have any PSUs -- you might get lucky. I grabbed an Antec NeoHE 550 for my GF at the one in Duluth, GA the other day, originally $150, after 60% discount it cost all of $60 (vs. $110+shipping @ the Egg). There were two more left. But obviously, don't go with the CompUSA brand.

Nice :)

I am looking at between 550 and 650 watts, as I plan on building a Core 2 overclocking system before the end of the year... I will have 5 hard drives, maybe a second 7800gt, and an overclocked Core 2, and I want the PSU to last me for awhile.. I have heard great things about Seasonic - I'm a silence nut :)

What do you guys think?
