Overclocking Mushkin Sp3200 (value) Ram

i'm about to overclock my ram (opty went all the way to 2.9!!) and i'd like to get any information i can. google didn't give me any results.

what chips are on these sticks? i'd like to know my max safe voltage. i know some value chips don't take voltage well, but others do. anybody else have this model?

lets say i get a max oc of 210mhz and voltage doesn't help. what timing settings should i play with? stock is 3-3-3-8. lets say 210 is still my max oc. should i bother bumping it down to 2t and try to get a better oc? lets say my oc is 230mhz. assuming my cpu would run the same speed at both settings, which oc would be better? 210 at 1t, or 230 at 2t?

the mushkin model is 991130 and it doesn't come with heatspreaders. what should i look for?

ram didn't pass memtest # 5 at 229, so i backed down to the previous increment - 226. should i run memtest overnight, or is this stable enough for my "isolate" overclock. also changed to 2t at 229, found 1 error (as opposed to 8 errors at 1t). looks like i get to stay at 1t




opteron 170-topped at 2.98 (prime errors). 2.9 should be stable, no?

John, you haven't given us enough information about anything except which IC's your RAM uses. For instance, what vdimm are you giving your RAM, and what timings are you running it at? You'll want to give it 2.8v of vdimm, and run it at either 3-3-3-8 1T or 3-4-3-8 1T timings. Assuming that's how you ran the tests, then you don't have much choice about which memory divider you're gonna have to use, because to be able to use the 166 Mhz divider, your RAM would have to be stable at 242 Mhz/484 DDR.

That means you're going to have to use the next lower divider, assuming you're wanting to run your 170 @ 2.9 Ghz. You'd have to back your overclock all the way down to 2.70 Ghz, to be able to use the 166 Mhz divider, which would then give you a 225 Mhz/DDR 450 RAM speed. At anything above 2.7 Ghz, you'll have to use a 150 Mhz or lower RAM divider. So, unless you want to lose 200 Mhz of overclock, just use the next lower RAM divider below 166, and you'll be fine.

i actually did back down to 2.7 because it would wouldn't boot into windows at 2.9...but it passed prime until 2.96, weird. the ram also wouldn't let me boot into windows at 225mhz, even though it passed memtest #5 at 226mhz. so currently it's running at 180mhz :

there was no overclocking difference between 1t and 2t. both failed at 229 and passed 226.

my mushkin value ram (sp3200) voltage is on "auto" aka 2.6. i know i should be careful about giving too much voltage to value memory, hence this "help me i'm a dumbass with overclocking" thread.

memory times are default: 3-3-3-8 forced to 1t. are you sure 3-4-3-8 and 2.8v are ideal? any information i left out? i want to help you guys help me

Yeah, I'm sure your RAM requires 2.8v of vdimm, if you want it to overclock very far at all; it has the same IC's as the PC3200 OCZ Platinums, IIRC. And yeah, go ahead and raise your RAM timings to 3-4-4-8 1T, until you've found out how high it will overclock (the 3 will be "Tcl" or "CL", depending on what your BIOS calls it). In other words, Tcl/CL: 3, Trcd: 4, Trp: 4, Tras: 8. Once you know how far they'll overclock, you can start trying to lower your timings a bit, if you want. Good luck.

tried 2.8vdimm and 3-4-4-8. max it would go was 215mhz...lower than before. i didn't bother with 2t. i think i'll keep this oc: 275fsb, 2:3 divider. memory is a little slow, but it's not noticeable.
