Overclocking Memory Speed on NVIDIA cards (7800GT)

Is there a reason why you can have different Core Clock speeds for 2D/3D.. but the Memory Speed must be the same for 2D and 3D?

I have worked around this by using some features in RivaTuner which change the profile when it sees the Core Speed jump up (ie. I go into a 3D game)..and the new profile will changed the Mem Speed.. and then when I exit, it changes the profile again. Is there a better way?

I would like to keep my vid card near stock speeds when doing normal use.. but then crank the speeds up near my max stable overclock when gaming. Am I just being silly, and should I just leave my Memory Speed cranked.. at 1200 for my 7800GT?
