I've read how good the Leadtek model of the 5900xt is for overclocking so i've given it a try. I used 3 different flash bios, A350XT (FX5900XT), A350 (FX5900), A380U (FX5950 Ultra). Here are the results. Question is at the end of this post.

FX5900XT:
350/700 - Stock - 3DMark03: 5091
471/864 - Auto-Detect - 3DMark03: 6047 - Post 3dmark temp: 47/42

FX5900:
400/850 - Manually Set - 3DMark03: 5313 - Post 3dmark temp: 57/47
429/907 - Auto-Detect - 3DMark03: 5663 - Post 3dmark temp: 57/47

FX5950 Ultra:
I read that if i could get my fx5900xt up to 450/850 it should be possible to flash with fx5950 ultra. Whenever i'd flash it, after loading windows sometimes it was recognizable but many times it was highly distorted. I did click Auto-Detect with this bios and it gave me 4811/962. Looked like it was running stable and then after restarting it, the screen was unusable.

Should it be possible for me to flash this card up to a fx5950u given my fx5900xt stats?

Your card should be able to flash.

If with 5950u flash, clock manually and don't depend on auto-detect as it will definitely overclock too much. Bench with 3dmark03 to check and see if the new flash gives you: 1) cooler temps or 2) still throttles back because of high temps due to higher voltages now allowed because of new ID.

Just keep it at the stock XT bios. I see no need to flash the card when you can run it at 471/864.

It's a huge boost from the original clock speeds. Do you think it'd be safe/advisable to try and get it even higher with the 5950u bios?

Upon second thought, the only reason why id see to change bioses is due to something called thermal throttling. Basically this is only on a select few cards. I cant remember which brands it is specifically placed on, but basically it makes it so that if the core gets above a certian temp, it will throttle it back down to a safe speed. Im pretty sure Leadtek isnt one of them, but you may want to double check my knowledge with the net because i am not 100% sure on this. If this doesnt exist on your card, you will not be able to clock it any higher dispite the bios used.

The Leadtek XT will do that on its own. Before I had my HS properly installed , it would go from 390 to 376, then to 300, all while in a game or running 3Dmark, and it got jerky for a couple seconds as it changed. Note that it got to around 100C when it did it.

However, you can do your own checking on this stuff very easily w/ Rivatuner.

I second that the A350XT TDH does thermal throttle down to 377 when under duress. My does it all the time after a couple of intense games of UT2004 it ALWAYS does it.
