Hey everyone,

I recently upgraded my graphics card and found that after doing so my CPU Overclock was reset back to normal by the bios and now it wont let me change it otherwise it just reboots and resets again.

My system:

E4300 @ 3.15Ghz ( Arctic Freezer Pro 7)
8600GT
2x pc6400 1Gb Patriot Extreme (4-4-4-12)
320gb Seagate
500gb WD (external)
Gigabyte P965 S3
OCZ Stealth-X-Stream 600 Watt
Vista 32 bit

My CPU has been running at 3.15 Ghz with absolutely no problem for about a year. i recently bought a 9600gt, ever since i installed it, my CPU OC reset to normal. i didnt think much of it at first but now that i've purchased stalker i wanted my system back to 3.15

however everytime i change the fsb from auto to manual my system reboots and resets the bios, even if i dont alter the FSB. it also wont let me change the pci e frequency from auto to manual.

I'm using the latest drivers and have tried updating the bios
my mobo is only pci-e and graphics cards is pci-e 2.0 . could that be causing any problems?

The card is correctly fitted and connected to the PSU properly. I tried my old 8600gt and once again my computer allowed me to change the FSB to get back to 3.15.

If i attempt to change the CPU frequeny to manual control (even if i keep it the same ) the computer boots and gets to the part where it says memory testing and then reboots and resets.

I tried upping some voltages but it didnt help.

Any ideas?

Welcome to anandtech. I've never heard of anything like your problem, but at least this post serves as a bump back to the top, in case someone else around here knows a solution.

This may be a dumb question, but did you lock the PCI-Express bus to 100mhz when you overclocked?

thats what i tried doing but if i canhge it from auto to 100mhz then it will just reboot again and reset it back to auto

Try clearing cmos and setting everything back to default. Then work your way back up...Worth a try :)

have your case temps gone up?
--does 9600 run hotter than 8600; if so it may have shut down your PC in the first place?

Running a PCIe 2.0 card in a 1.0 slot is NP

is your PCI frequency locked to 100Mhz in the BIOS? double check it as well as your CPU:RAM divider - sometimes they get reset and your RAM is left running out of spec which forces the CPU to default to stock speeds. My P35 Gigabyte will do this

my case has very good air flow, also the 8600gt runs alot hotter then the 9600gt.

also i cant lock my frequency to 100mhz because if i change it from auto to any value such as 100Mhz, during post it will reboot and reset the bios. the same happens if i simply change cpu frequency from auto to any specific value, even if that value is the same as the "auto" value. The divider is set set correctly to make sure the ram is in right spec.

I just cant understand why this is happenening, although i have a feeling it has mainly to do with my motherboard/bios.

There has been at least one other thread still at the top of the pile where this symptom surfaced in some other way. I've also discussed it with another member in PM's.

I also had that problem when I simply returned to default from an over-clock setting so that I could get some benchmark baselines and install an additiional piece of hardware.

Nobody has been able to identify precisely why this happens. ONe remedy seems to be CLR_CMOS. Even that didn't work for me a few weeks back: I re-flashed the same BIOS version and everything was working again. (After clearing CMOS, of course. The NB chipset and the motherboard went "south" a week after that, and the mobo is in for RMA repair under warranty as we speak.]

i've read a lot into it and like you said there doesnt seem to be any solution. i've given up on it now and just bought a 8800GT to replace the 9600gt which will be hitting ebay soon.
