Overclocking Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz to...

4.0 GHz. I read somewhere that this was possible. Someone had stably overclucked their 2.8GHz to 4.0GHz. I'm gonna do this, any advice?

It's likely...but you'll need a nice cooler, lol. The thick aluminum stock one is only good for about 3.2ghz on that thing imho.

Believe it or not; this is an upgrade... the CPU I was using before this was a Cyrix MII 75MHz Processor. That is, 75MHz @ 2.9V.

Well, this heater is getting dunked in mineral oil. Sufficient?

The hottish oil (say 50c) will be pumped through a pipe into a refrigerated cooler, taking it back down to a reasonable temperature (say 30c).

I was never going to get that for overclucking, but I'm hopeful I'l get somewhere like 3.3 or 3.5 without melting my case.

I may have had a brain burp when I put 4.

But Ive had a proper look around and 3.0 seems reasonable

Good to hear. Do you, or anyone else, have a rough idea of the voltage necessary for that frequency? Lets say the cooling system keeps it at around 45 deg C.

I've heard about the lack of overclockability with Dell motherboards, isn't there a way around their BIOS locks? or can't you OC outside of BIOS?

Software FSB overclocking is not good. I've trashed 2 s478 boards by doing so. Unless that board isnt crap or oemblocked, you're only going to be stable at 2.8ghz and below.

Why bother ? You can get a dual-core that at stock will blow away that chip with this one for $50

And you can overclock to between 3.6 and 4 ghz most likely.

Why would you spend a dime on that POS CPU ?

yeah even if you get that turd to 4.0, a modern Core 2 at 2.0 would still be better while using way less power.
