Overclocking Intel Pentium 4 540J

I'm looking to get a little more "oomph" out of my Northwood 540J before I upgrade to an AMD FX-57 this summer (I hope!), so I looked into over clocking success for the 540J. I was thrilled to find a guy named Thomas from CA actually got this baby to a blazing 5.4Ghz! I'm not hoping for anything near that fast, but you know, a little kick in the butt for an old girl to get back up in the high-end. However, I'm having a little trouble with the overclock-lock on my motherboard, can anyone give me some advice?

The "My Rig" page keeps popping up an error, but here's a quick summary:
- Intel P4 3.2Ghz 540J (Northwood Core)
- Intel D875PBZ Motherboard
- Corsair 512MB XMS-PC3200LL (x4)
- BFG nVidia GeForce FX 5950 Ultra

There's a few things you need to understand.

1) You do not have a 540J. That is a different core which is not yours. You have a Northwood which is a 'C' revision. Max oc you could get out of that with proper parts, voltage, settings and cooling is 4.0Ghz

2)You have an Intel branded Motherboard. There is no hope of overclocking it.

3) 5.4Ghz is not possible unless you have Liquid nitrogen or Phase-change cooling or in other words, a fridge for your computer.

4) Don't bother OCing altogether. You got what you payed for, just wait a few more months for an FX-57 then have some fun.

Your motherboard has an overclock-lock? Never heard of it that before, you might want to try overclocking from within windows, using Clockgen (http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php).

Barring that try to find a modded bios for your motherboard, just google your motherboard model and 'bios mods'.

Good luck, hope you get a nice phat overclock!

I think all 915P/925X chipsets have a 10% overclock limit. Apparently ASUS and Abit have broken it on their motherboards.

Its an intel brand motherboard, its not a clock lock in the bios, it simply doesnt have the clockgens.

You cant change the fsb to anything other than 400/533/800

Thanks for that clockgen program, I am currently using that, got it running at only 3.4Ghz though, when I shot for the 3.6 mark the voltage went to over 3, system crashed :( . I'll keep messing with it, thanks for the advice.
