Overclocking Intel G45 and using the Integrated Graphics

So I'm trying to overclock a Shuttle barebones system with Intel G45 chipset and an E6400. The chip will do 3.2 GHz easy (8x400) and is Prime stable. As soon as I start a 3D app the system crashes immediatly. I back the system down to 2.66 GHz (8x333) and 3d apps work fine. I'm guessing the integrated graphics cannot handle the 400 MHz FSB. Has anyone seen an article or have any personal experience with this? I'm looking for what the max overclock the integrated graphics side of the chipset can take?

Hmm, with the relatively weak cooling for the intel chipset on those shuttle boxes (I just built one with an X4500HD), I'm not sure you're going to find an easy solution. Best bet IMHO is to go ahead and get a HD 4650 or something similar and totally forgo the onboard video. That way you don't lose the HDMI + Audio option, but will get a decent upgrade from the onboard video.

Yeah that would be the best; I was building this system for a friend and trying to keep it as cheap as possible. My friend doesn't game so I was thinking he could get away with integrated graphics. The only way I noticed this issue is when I installed Google Earth which uses 3D acceleration.

I would get the MSI 4350 512MB video for about $20 shipped after rebate. I actually got mine for $15 shipped but I think the coupon I used has expired.

Edit: I just looked and its now $35 with no rebate available. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127436

Either way, its a good non-gaming hdmi video card and is silent as well. :)

For a non-gamer, that's a fantastic suggestion! The 4350 is easily better than using the onboard, and some resources will be freed up as well.
