Overclocking in XP- stability??

I have been running Win 98 and am a little leary about losing some of my control over my OS (like XP). I however, got in on the XP Pro hot deal for $39.95 and am really considering installing it. Have any of you encountered stability problems while OC'ing in XP?? I have a KR7A-133R mobo running a XP1700+. Although the abit isn't really stable over 143, I still like it (maybe I'll upgrade that too). In general is OC'ing in XP more difficult than Win 98 (OC'ing video card also)??

I have 98SE and 2000 in a dual boot setup. XP should work the same as XP...if you have an extra partition that is large enough, load up XP in a dual boot and if you don't like it, erase it. When you put in the XP CD in a "boot from CD," it should give you an option to install on a second partition and keep the old OS as well.

Problem is I don't have a second partition on my current hdd, and it is "only" a 20gb hdd. I'll probablty get a new hdd and try XP. How would I erase it from my current hdd without losing my current OS (98)??

you will love XP. it's a very stable environment for overclocking.

Get XP...you won't go back. There's a bit less info when things do screw up than w/ win2k, and check out www.tweakxp.com to "unfriendly" it, but...I have yet to have BSOD on any XP machine, overclocking or not. Try a single HD dual-boot. Chances are pretty good you'll stop using 98 in a few weeks.

You won't regret using XP. I think it's a liitle bit more stable than Win98. Still, it's not perfect...

I wont be going back to windows XP pro anytime soon. I liked the layout of it better, and in general liked it for its features. But it was too friggin slow. I remember opening up my MP3 folder and waiting for nearly 3 minutes before I could do anything. This was on a fresh install also!

I have already reverted one machine back to windows 2000 SP3 and I can say Im happy. No more waiting. Everything works great! Next up is the dualie and my dads computer. All going back to windows SP3.

Some people have also reported SP3 limiting there overclock. It didnt affect me any, but who knows.

2000 is way better overall.. but XP won't be any different for overclocking. if anything XP is more stable than 98 for sure.

I've had no problems whatsoever overclocking any AMD chips in XP. Go for it, buddy. You'll be glad you did. 🙂

Xp Pro is good, but there are so many bugs (although I must admit I have never had BSOD). XP is basically NT5.1, with a pretty interface. I'd settle for 2000 SP3 (It's probably the most stable OS the Microsoft produces).

But hey, if you can get it to work, and you like it, use it.

Your CPU is the culprit of unstability, not your mobo.

My Kr7A with XP1600+ AGOIA hits 160FSB w/o a hitch.

The highest I could go with a XP1700+ AGKGA was 145FSB.

Adding a new OS won't let you go higher.

I have an AGOGA- same run that some 1900+ were made from early on in the XP life cycle. These chips have some pretty high results from what I saw here on the forums at the time. Maybe I should just try a proven OC'er from someone here on the forum. I have been thinking of the XP1600 from newegg, but how do I guarantee the batch?
