overclocking help w/ 1.6A

ok, before i start here is the rig:

1.6A w/ stock HSF
gigabyte 8I-EXP
512 crucail pc2700, 256 kingmax pc3200
9600 pro
330 enermax PSU
80 GB WD SE
16X pioneer DVD
32X TDK burner
5X case fans
fortissmo II sound card

before i switched to my AMD setup, I had this sucker up to 2.2-2.3 with no problems. ran it 24/7. now when i go above 2 Ghz, windows freezes or is highly instable. i was thinking of changing the HSF, but even in the summer heat, idle temps are only in the lower to mid 30's load temp are upper 30's, maybe will crack 40. i need some ideas what is goin wrong here guys! thanx

It's possible (maybe even likely) that the CPU is the victim of electro migration due to its overclocked life, and just can't do 2 GHZ+ anymore.

Hrmm, I had a 1.6A that did the exact same thing, the funny thing was I had it running at 2.24ghz or something and then I couldn't get it past 2.1ghz after I dusted and cleaned my system (reinstalling everything, BIOS, reformat, computer spring cleaning if you will). I thought I fried my chip, but in actuallity it just required slower RAM timings. I dropped it to 2-3-3-5 and it went back stable at 2.24, then I got it to 2.3 after that.

Hrmm, I don't know, have you tried using only one stick of RAM, it could be a compatibility issue, though I don't know what to tell you if those were the same sticks you used before. Was that the exact system setup you had before when you bumped it up to 2.2-2.3ghz?

Try with one stick of RAM that might do the trick. I would use the crucial though. If that doesn't work and you've tried just about every combination then maybe your CPU is damaged in some way, I dunno. I can't really suggest anything because tweaking a P4 is pretty much the same as tweaking an AMD and you pretty much know how that goes 😉.

I won't go above 1.6v. I have had two of the ten 1.6As that I have overclocked fry and both were above 1.65v. That's just my choice others get away with higher vcore and everything is fine for them 😉

I believe P4 chips are not OC durable as athlon chips. My 1.6a could hit 2.48ghz @ 1.68V. Now it can barely hit 2.4ghz.

Isn't this called SNDS? Well...not really sudden, but it degrades over time.

Edit: For those who don't know SNDS = Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome
